Since I'm in the music world, I think that the performers were very hard hit by Covid at the beginning of the pandemic, especially singers/choristers, and since their livelihood and their lives depend on not being out with Covid, and the performing calendar is scheduled sometimes years in advance and it's a huge mess when someone's out, their performing space really needs to be reasonably Covid-free.
Strathmore Music Center recently went mask-optional, but not for the people practicing there: my kid who rehearses in the MCYO orchestra is under a mandatory mask policy, just like last year (where they had a weekly health check-in as well).

Show was as amazing as ever. Mask changed nothing about it. And bc I am not a F**king toddler having a tantrum, I didn’t think twice about putting my mask on.
Would I have worn a mask just purely for myself? Probably not - I am vaxxed and fairly young and healthy. But am I happy to do it -STILL-for the same reason as ever…yes, I am.
Literally just tonight I was spending time w/ the adult son of a family friend. The son has Down’s syndrome and is in his 30s. His lungs are starting to fail to him. He had painted a portrait of my beloved dog and i was picking it up from him. I wear masks in public places so that people like him can continue living. If you really, really can’t understand that, you are a literal psychopath.
As someone with loved ones who have varying degrees of health issues, thank you. If only everyone had thought this way through 2020, we would have many more people still alive with us now. The lack of any feelling of a larger obligation, both to public health and to the lives of those who will be more harmed than the rest of us -- that lack was, and still is, appalling. But the answer here is too often, "Well, they should just stay home forever, then, and let the rest of us get on with OUR lives." Such profound selfishness, and it's actually worse than ever, with people deciding they're "over it." So my dear friend with damaged lungs should just never go to theater again, I guess....

Theater got really hard hit and it closes down a show quickly when performers get sick. Plus you are sitting there for hours in close quarters. I'm glad people wear masks. I just don't see how it's a big deal and I have massive asthma -- I can't wear them when walking outdoors or excercising, so I think I'm on the sensitive side, but sitting in an air conditioned theater is totally fine. My kids are also all fine with it. This just seems like such a non-issue and if it helps keep the theaters open, then great.
I keep reading this hear, but everything I can find online says Broadway went mask-optional back in July. Is this not the case?
Broadway is not requiring masks. I saw a show on Broadway in Aug. and masks were not required. Someone keeps posting this but they are wrong.
Broadway in NYC required masks until July 2022
Yes, which was [checks calendar] in the past. This is now. In the present we're asking why the Kennedy Center still requires them.
