The "service member" was no longer active duty and was not in Russia serving his country. His prior service has no relevance to getting him released from his sentence for the crime he committed.

Also, what kind of message does this send to incarcerated people state side convicted of marijuana possession? Maybe we should have released Whelan first. Y’ver think about that?
