I have to wonder if this was sabotaged from within by people who understood its danger. My understanding is some cooler heads in the administration were opposed. Hiring this person for the board seems like either pure incompetence or intentional sabotage.

Create a Ministry of Truth, then appoint a hyper-partisan ultra left wing political pundit to head the department and tell the public that she is impartial. Millions of people laugh at you and she quietly resigns a couple weeks later in disgrace before even taking office. Can't make this shit up.
Like everything else..... they need to blame their poor decisions and horrendous roll-out on something other than their total incompetency.

C-Span doesn't report anything and doesn't report facts. What it does is show congressional primary sources without editorilizing. The AP is a private business that aggregates and distributes news. But I agree with your underlying sentiment. It needs to be insulated from politics and integrity is essential. C-span for facts should be the model.
Streaming source information is the very definition of reporting facts.
AP is a non profit that employs many journalists and does in fact report news. AP is the source for most other news outlets. Comparing it to Snopes is ... strange.
AP is better than some, but they could use some fact checking too.
