Jack’s mom was totally overshadowed by his Dad, and he never really knew or appreciated who she was. In many ways, Rebecca is overshadowed by the kids’ memories of their perfect Dad and they don’t see her as a person in her own right. (Probably true of many kid-parent relationships.) it’s only know as they’re losing her that they are finally starting to know her (remember how tense the relationships were when the show started? Kate and Rebecca, Kevin and Miguel?

The unreliability of memory was another theme that linked this with the present day storyline.

I thought this too. Also the idea that the past isn't so black and white, either perfect or horrible, with everyone either a hero or a villain. Jack was a good dad and also kind of a jerk, Nicky is too. Jacks mom doesn't believe his childhood was completely miserable. Rebecca and Kate both see the past in black and white and so did jack. We get to see that it is more complex

[twitter] Also I do remember the episode he helped his mom escape - might have been an early Rebecca episode.[/twitter]
Thanks - I had completely forgotten about that.

Jack may have been a great dad but he was a shitty son. No excuse for not driving those kids 4 hours to go damn ice skating one winter.

Yeah, they completely erased Nicky from Jack’s childhood which was super weird. But I think they thought Nicky was dead during the period when his mom died?

Also, Jack, if you don’t want your dad to come to the funeral, maybe tell him after it’s over.

Did we know that his mom had left his dad before this? And when did she leave?

Best I can guess is that Nicky was not yet born at the time. I think the brothers were about 4 years apart, and the boy on the show looked like he could be playing an older 4 (kids had a lot more freedom to roam in those days).

I have no idea why Jack wouldn’t call his brother though, especially when they just showed a few episodes ago that he stayed back from Woodstock to protect her and he felt like Dad was treating her better when he was around. Maybe Jack didn’t know yet that he made it out of Vietnam alive - the postcard to Nicky was dated 1992, and Nicky did not use his real name at Walter Reed.

This is Us continuity is definitely loose but this might have fit.

It was very, very slow. I liked how the mom blossomed over time. And I liked how Milo kind of nailed the annoyed tolerance when she was practically catatonic. Also liked how the cousin found Jack annoying but was sweet to Rebecca and the kids. Definitely not one of their best, but I think they did some interesting things.
