Let’s be clear, crime is terrible and violent crime in particular undermines the social compact. There is too much crime and violent crime in DC. The people getting violently attacked is outrageous. However, what is also outrageous are these people competing for attention to me too these bad incidents. To piggy back on others misery to get attention and condolences from others for their own person sense of entitlement and victimhood.

The city absolutely needs to improve and halt this decline but also, absolutely no one should listen to these people whine.

People aren't whining to establish their own victimhood. They are shocked to find out that this supposedly fun, progressive city is reminiscent of the meth den rust belt cities they left. They also have to vent online anonymously because there is zero community support in DC for victims of crime, it's all about guessing the backstory of the criminal and throwing out some theories about how to get people to behave properly without arresting anyone.

I think what they are shocked to discover in DC is that black people can bother them without fear of state violence. Just because black people bother you does not mean that you are the victim of a crime.

Getting robbed, stabbed, beaten and killed makes one a victim of a crime.

None of those people are complaining on Reddit actual crime victims.

Uncivil behavior undermines the ability to build community but it is not a crime in the USA. The chief complaint from every single one of these people is that a black person has been uncivil to them without repercussions. And some are absolutely apoplectic that it has happened in front of police officers!

Violent crime is a big issue in DC. These people thinking that their share any commonality with actual crime victims is offensive.

Certainly the types of incivility described is not nice and has negative impacts on quality of life. If you are someone who cannot countenance a black person being uncivil to you then you may be more comfortable moving somewhere else and a lot of people have!

Ah, yet another progressive claiming POC don't commit sexual harassment, it's just incivility when they do it.

Street harassment is not against the law. I am not sure how this is not understood.

If someone harassed you on the street, that sucks. But it’s not a crime and you are not the equivalent to an actual violent crime victim.

In DC, uncivil behavior by black people in certain neighborhoods is very prevalent. If you don’t like it then don’t go to those neighborhoods. Similarly, in Philly uncivil behavior by white people in certain neighborhoods is also very prevalent and people that are wise also avoid those neighborhoods.

Thankfully there are lots of places one can live in DC proper where uncivil behavior is not the norm.

Encountering uncivil behavior does not make you a victim!

I’m not sure what to make of your point here. Seems like you are effectively saying that (a) uncivil behavior by black people undermines the ability of DC residents to build a cohesive community and (b) anyone who has a problem with either the lack of community or the things preventing the formation of community needs to just leave. Ordinarily, I would write you off as pretty severely racist. Weird thing is that I suspect you think what you said is somehow progressive or reflects positively on you.

LOL. You’re a trip living in a delusional world. Go ahead and look up the stats on how many people get killed by police each year, both the aggregate number and the demographic breakdowns. You might be surprised at what you see.

It’s weird how the bar just gets lowered as we grind on as a country. Obviously we had a bad past, but some of the liberal policies enacted to counter that are so swlf flagellating and masochistic.

Race neutral tests for entry to rigorous schools don’t have the right results? Nix em. Ap classes too hard and the optics aren’t right on who takes the classes? Nix em. Car jackings, kids lighting leaves on fire under cars in Hill East, and shooting paintballs in the winter at people in their homes? That’s okay you live in the city and some people should get a pass to do that because incarceration rates are optically unpalatable. If you don’t like it move to McLean. Discipline in school? Again, bad optics, so we new to let suspensions and expulsions slide in favor of “restorative justice” and lax policies, even for physical bullying, that put the abused in a less safe position. We also need to let bikers ride around the city on Honda dirt bikes because we just can’t even stop it and it’s cool, we should lower the bar for teens to commit crimes with the youth Rehabiliation act and let violent criminals out earlier with the 2nd chance act. It’s slap on the wrist these days. In California they’ve raised the threshold for theft to over $1000, and there are increasing amounts of smash and grab robberies.

Then you have these neighborhood Facebook groups full of idealistic, altruistic until it hurts idiots who will slander you for being concerned about crime and tell you not to call the police if someone is trying to steal a package off your porch or shoots a paintball at your house because they might get arrested and have a bad future. We will all have a bad future if we don’t actually allow good police to police. There are bad police, but most aren’t. I give up. I’m not leaving dc, but I wish we could get someone who doesn’t show extreme fealty to these aggressive progressive sort of crime people.

Here here. Agree with all of this. People are basically saying now that because too many people from one demographic are in jail we must make sure to "right the stats" by not locking up any others no matter what they've done. Because to your point they think we need equity in who goes to prison even if a disproportionate amount of crime is committed by that group.

There is no disproportionate amount of crime, only disproportionate policing. Let's start with that.

So you're saying there are an equal number of carjackings committed across races but only certain demographics are being arrested? Is this something you just think or is there data showing this? There must be data since you kind of have to report your car being stolen at gun point

Nice try but I'm not getting in the mud with you. If George Floyd isn't enough data for you, nothing will change your unrepentant mind.

I am the PP arguing above that harassment is NOT actual violence and I will say exactly. This is the stuff that people should be up in arms about. The folks on Reddit and their sympathizers here could not care less about the actual violence. Unless of course they can find a way to make it all about them and their perceived victimhood.

You are nuts. Absolutely nuts. Let's start with your racist assumption that the harassers in DC are all Black. What is your motivation in injecting race into it? Harassment is harassment; it is not acceptable in civil society.

WTH??? American cities have "war zone" equivalents and if you don't like it, stay out?

This is the 2022 version of "well she deserved it since she wore such a revealing outfit."

I would argue that the “culture” such that I can see is actually people getting social credit for having “experiences” and as a result more and more people are turning ordinary city interactions into a story of their own victimhood.
