Yes, there will be a bigger variety of kids there from in state, but that’s what makes it down to earth! I’d go Big 10 school. IU, Illinois, OSU, Michigan (although interesting comment above about competitiveness there) Perdue.
I don’t know as much about them but UNC, Florida, UT and Georgia are also very highly ranked flagships
A school that can support housing like https://www.thestandardannarbor.com/ is not entirely down to earth. At any elite school, there will be very rich kids who are the opposite of down to earth. There will also e down to earth kids.

Too many wealthy, east coast students that judge anyone not like them. And the students judge each other by grades, post grad jobs, and Greek status.
Purdue felt much more laid back. People say hello when you walk by. Purdue has an academic boot camp and study centers. I never had that at Michigan.
Purdue isn't elite.

Yes they are
DP. No, they're not.Neither is W&M or half a dozen other schools mentioned in this thread.
What's your standard of elite?
DP, elite is something like top 10. Certainly not beyond top 20.
So you're saying No. 6-ranked Carleton isn't?
No. 6 ranked where?
