It’s funny, people are acting like some of us who got our periods in the 80s and early 90s were a bunch of rubes for not having the common sense to avoid flushing. But if you look at that link, ads at that time were just broaching the topic of whether tampon users were still virgins or not. Common sense changes with the times.

Personally, all I remember about my introduction to tampons was the fear of TSS. We definitely covered that in health class and it made an impression. But flushing? This was the least of our tampon concerns.

I agree, for older women the confusion comes from the way they were marketed. You set your habits at thirteen and don't really revisit. I'm 49, I was probably flushing until 30. It's obvious to me now that it makes no sense to do so, but it *is* what we were told to do. See the last paragraph here:

I’ve thrown a tampon into a the porta potty hole before- and felt terribly guilty after. But in my defense, there is no garbage and I didn’t have a purse with me.

Actually, a lot of "civilized" countries do require that you do this to save their antiquated plumbing systems. It's very clear to me from the language that you use that you're not particularly cultured and rarely (possibly never) travelled overseas.

I live in a Western European city that has existed since the 1200s and our sewage system cannot handle flushed tampons. I cannot believe that flushing tampons is something people do. My dh's parents own a hotel and have had several costly sewage system repairs necessitated by foreign women who ignore signs and flush anyway. What a disgusting, piggish thing to do.



Yeah, PPs who flush clearly are not children of immigrants and haven't ever traveled overseas. There are signs EVERYWHERE in tourist destinations to keep American women from doing this.

My parents are from a country where indoor plumbing is a fairly recent (~50 years) thing and if you are fortunate enough to have it, you absolutely know that you don't flush anything that your body does not produce - including toilet paper.

It is essentially flushing a large sponge down your toilet, several times per day, several days per month. Someone needs to tell you not to do that?

Yes in the 90s and early 2000s I was also instructed to flush. I have switched to more sustainable methods but in honor of all the sanctimonious jerks in this thread I am going back to tampons for my next cycle and the plan to flush them everywhere.

I got my first period in the early 90s, and definitely was taught by books, my mother, health teacher, etc. that you could flush a tampon. But NEVER pads!!! Heck, my father was an executive for Kimberly-Clark (aka Kotex) and never said anything about not flushing tampons. I really don't understand the vitriol some of ya'll have, lol. I get that it's scummy to flush them once you know it's bad, but if you don't know--why attack? This is apparently not common knowledge.
