I really think SL read that letter DD sent to her organ recipient and personalized it. She was imagining being the recipient of DD’s kidney and it enraged her because the thought of owing anything to this person she didn’t like, with whom she was professionally competitive, was revolting to her. I think all she saw was the power DD had in giving someone an organ and the thought of DD with power made her really, really mad.

She was thinking only of herself and how she, personally, would feel about receiving an organ from DD.

I don’t think it ever crossed her mind to attempt to empathize with or view the situation from the actual, IRL organ recipient. Who didn’t know DD and likely didn’t care that donating a kidney offered DD some agency in her own life. He had never taken a writing workshop with DD, he had no context or feelings about her one way or another, he did not receive her letter and think “white savior” (I am certain, not least because he is also white). He was, I’m sure, grateful for her sacrifice. He might have had other complex feelings. He might also, like SL’s character, have resented that feeling of obligation of gratitude. I could see that. He might have wondered what possessed DD to donate to a stranger. I’d be interested to read a story from his point of view, or his imagined point of view, written by a talented author with empathy.

SL is just empathizing with herself. Boring as all get out.

My uncle had a heart transplant so somewhat familiar with the organ donation process (although I guess perhaps it is different for kidneys since living donor is an option). And it’s just so, so bad.

It was very confusing until I realized that Chip Cheek is a name. A terrible name. But a name.
