Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean: there's a US-UK base there that is absolutely critical to American interests, since it's the only one in the region to have a long enough runway for B2 bombers, the ones that can carry the huge bombs that took out Iran's nuclear facility last year. It's critical for America's Middle Eastern and pan-Asian politics. And Trump has been grousing about the UK giving back the island to Mauritius, AS PROMISED LONG AGO, even though the base is still leased for 99 years and nothing will change on the ground, at all. The Americans are still operating the base as they used to, and have the right to use it for the duration of the lease.
