If this were a southern state it would work but NYC with its nine million people cannot rely on church food drives. The tax money is all going somewhere. If Mamdani is going to reroute that to universal child care , that would be smarter than the city grocery store as universal child care or child tax credits is something that all demographics can enjoy. It’s expensive to raise a kid and even Trump admin was considering child tax credit of sorts so it can’t be brushed off as a solely socialist concept

The Yemeni American Merchants Association, one of the largest NYC food and Bev small business owners in the city endorsed Brad Lander, the Jewish candidate and rabbi, for mayor last month.

Is there one single taxpayer funded grocery store that is successful in this entire country? No.
Better to let church organizations give free donated food to poor people. Mamdani should encourage more of that. Why not?

There are not that many churches in New York able to feed the poor. COVID decimated many of the churches. the ones that are there are barely keeping the lights on even with parochial schools. During COVID, mayor Deblasio threatened shutting down any churches that still held services
