Isn't the VA legislature's (ie Dems) leverage maximized by forcing Youngkin to call a special session?

Whatever deal is struck will be very clear if it's all in a single bill rather than packaged around the budget.

Also the bill did not sail through through the General Assembly— a lot of no votes and a lot of people who said they voted for it to keep it alive but might change their mind

I posted way back on page 1 or 2 of this 144 page thread that I thought the original announcement seemed awfully shaky and I was shouted down that "It's a done deal!".

I am therefore skeptical that it is truly dead.

Me too. I'm also wondering about the stated urgency on closing the deal. I thought it was somehow tied to the Target lease in Potomac Yard, and needed to be decided quickly so Target could decide what to do? This feels like something that could still happen next session if all parties are still willing.

I think it was due to the remaining time Youngkin had in office. He cannot serve a consecutive term so he’s out Jan 2026.

That makes sense. Maybe it will come back as an option if a democrat is governor, that way Lucas won't have to object to giving an R a win.

This really doesn't have anything to do with party lines.

My Republican neighbors (Alexandria) do not want/support the arena.

Alexandria's mayor and city council are All Democrats, and generally support the arena.

It's an awful plan for the area, and there is wide bipartisan opposition (regular people, not the elected officials who don't care about their constituents)

It’s all about Louise Lucas going after Glenn Youngkin. It has nothing to do with the merits of the stadium proposal. Lucas could care less about Alexandria; it’s 200 miles from her district. All she cares about is sticking it to Youngkin and bragging about it on social media.

You forget that Lucas was the sole member who stopped the bill after it sailed through the House.

The arena would have affected Virginian taxpayers in the entire state, not just Northern Virginian.

And thank goodness for Ms. Lucas - because those of us who may have been affected additionally locally, had our elected representatives completely ignore us, despite a majority opposition.

It’s also about putting state taxpayers on the hook for billions in bonds to build it. She cares about having to pay that debt even if she is 200 miles away.

That said it also sounds like the pro arena people were just cocky and dumb. Figured they could a deal without Lucas ever being told about it and make her take it or leave it, instead of actually trying to get her buy in.

I don't understand DC wasting tons of $$$s attracting the Commanders and only 8 home games per year.

While it is, the traffic/access issues for that area are relatively the same as PY in terms of metro access. Certainly the road access for cars is better. I could see a workable solution there, but it would require a significant upgrade and expansion of the streetcar system as well.

The outerloop over Wilson Bridge is a parking lot during rush hour. Ted has already said the majority of Caps season ticket holders live in Virginia. National Harbor would be even worse than potomac yards

To be clear, the largest percentage is in virginia, but it doesn't constitute a majority

To be clear, most VS fans do not benefit from the move to PY. In fact, for many VA fans, the Metro ride or drive will be longer, not shorter. This potential move does not benefit most VA fans.

I support the arena. It's a terrible idea for Alexandria and I live here.

Alexandria Democrats put the Mayor and City Council in office and we all watched them drool all over Ted at the press conference. Time for Alexandria Dems to enjoy the mess they created!

Mayor Justin Wilson wrote that. He is just absolutely awful.

This is the man who wrote "when it rains, it pours" when notified of an apparent gang rape at the 9th grade building.

Why does it surprise you?

You can have 2 terms, just not consecutive.

No. It’ll never be a good idea.

It has never been this way in Virginia. The commonwealth seems have done generally fine for several hundred years.
