miranda does not know much about education, just RTS stuff which is serving her well in this climate. In a normal election she wouldn't even be running our stand a chance.

Saying her kids are at a school in south Arlington does not paint an accurate picture. Her kids were very much in north Arlington elementary schools and now in Kenmore MS - a school literally on the south side of Route 50 - and are likely to attend their districted north Arlington high school.

As a parent whose children are solidly in south Arlington schools from a high poverty ES to a high poverty MS to Wakefield, I don't think this is what most people conjure up in their minds when they hear someone from north Arlington sent their kids to Kenmore. They are still very much north Arlington folks.

Do you prefer a S Arlington family who sends their kids to private school? Because that's what Miranda is.

DP. She sent one of her children to private for part of a year due to extenuating circumstances related to a pandemic. Stop manipulating and exaggerating.

The more Kadera supporters go low and try to slime Turner, the more convinced I am that it’s because they can’t come up with anything positive their candidate had to offer as an alternative.

Agree.

You're fine with campaign volunteers intentionally misleading voters, but pointing out basic facts like where their kids go to school is "sliming" someone? GMAFB.

This whole thing is ridiculous. APE spreads toxicity wherever it goes.

I’m not part of APE, but even I agree with PP. All of these claims about her sending her kid (singular) to private school due to lack of access to in-person schooling really doesn’t reflect what you’re saying. I’ve heard she plans to have this kid return to Drew once school is back in person full time.

I was on the fence, but these Kadera crazies have made it an easy choice.

One doesn’t have to be part of APE to agree that kids should be in school full time right now. And spare me the comments saying it’s a non-issue because we are guaranteed in-person school next year. We were also promised summer school, yet here we are. I have no confidence in APS currently.

You weren't promised summer school. Every communication qualified the summer school plans on the ability to secure teachers. For the fall, state law (SB 1303) requires full-time, in-person learning for anyone who wants it. Teachers teaching virtually do not satisfy the law's requirement that a teacher be physically in each classroom. If there is an outbreak at a school, only that school can close --not others in that district -- and only for so long as it takes to clear that outbreak. Clearly, reading is not your strong suit or you would already know this information.

Yeah, until the teachers unions (“but they’re not uuuuuunions!”) b*tch and complain. Apparently, history isn’t your strong suit.

I’m also voting for Miranda. Mostly because Mary’s signs say “educator approved!” Yeah, they approve of her because her opponent wants them to actually go back to work.

Way to win me over. I’ll vote for Miranda, thanks. And now I’ll spread the word to friends that have no idea this race is even happening.

Ok? I wasn't trying to win over anyone, certainly not an anonymous commenter on DCUM. Just a fed up parent who is, frankly, tired of both sides spewing BS about everything and just trying to correct the record where I can.

I am not a member of APE, and the whataboutism is getting really old. I am so tired of the toxic and hypocritical behavior of Kadera supporters, and it clearly is no longer worth bothering to engage with you when all you want to do is attack, insult and mislead.

One of my biggest issues with the school board for a while has been how difficult it seems to be to interact with them directly. The rotation of open office hours mean there are very limited opportunities to talk to a specific board member directly, and they tend to be unresponsive to emails. I am hopeful that Turner would bring a new spirit of openness and accessibility to the board.

Also, she and I overlapped at law school, and I remember she being really smart and sharp. I think she would bring strong critical thinking skills to the board.

I don’t think this is true. I have talked to Tania Talento while grocery shopping, and Dave Priddy while attending kids’ sporting events (basketball, soccer, and baseball). It’s not like they are effete members of an aristocracy, but it’s been a farking Pandemic! Also, have interacted with SB members at our PTA meetings, and other committees I volunteer on. Maybe it’s you who isn’t accessible.

I have tried to attend their school board hours and their attitudes toward callers was appalling. You have 2 min to speak, no response, no back and forth.

+1. The lack of back and forth, the lack of willingness to engage in a dialogue with constituents is a big problem, and it’s part of why so many people don’t feel heard by the school board. This is local government, and local government officials are expected to be more available to constituents than at higher levels of government. Heck, this is something Arlington prides itself on, that it’s small size allows more direct interaction between the government and citizens. I shouldn’t have to stalk board members to figure out which grocery store they shop in and then loiter around for hours hoping to catch them there so I can get a better understanding of where they stand on an issue.

My point was they are real humans, who live and work and shop like the rest of us. Not saying you should stalk them. I certainly wasn’t, just had accidental run-ins with them, and they didn’t run away or refuse to speak with me. But I haven’t gone to virtual SB office hours. Are you talking about office hours or SB meetings? During regular times, office hours, held once a week with the members rotating duty, are where you go to dialogue, one-on-one. SB meetings have always had the format that speakers have 2 minutes, may not address particular members directly, and will not be responded to on the spot.

"Very much" in north? I don't know where she lives but McKinley is <1 mile from Rt 50, the dividing line between N & S addresses.
