The current admission policy is definitely race neutral. It's wholistic review with a standard test component. The test doesn't care about your race. If you work hard you will do well in the test. It's just like the process of NBA teams drafting their players is race neutral too. NBA teams don't care about your race. They draft players based on some tests about your athletic ability and reviews. The fact that NBA players are predominately one race does not mean the admission policy is not race neutral.

Exactly. There is a huge amount of casual anti-Asian racism in this community and on this board. Those people need to examine their thoughts and statements. Many are from those who fully adopted the anti-racist philosophy but ?s of their own racism against Asian Americans. It’s not just trumpers who do it. It has become a huge problem in America and those folks need to own up to their own thinking and statements.

I think you could replace the word Asian in the above statement, with black, Latino, trans, woman, gay etc and it would ring true also. It's not just Asians who feel unfairly treated, nothing new.

And that is exact definition of casual racism. You think it should not be a big deal because it is not unique. If you see it from the point of view of the folks at the receiving end of it, you will see it differently. Unless you are Black and appreciate Black history, you don’t truly understand why they feel discriminated. Applying a generic broad brush that says “you are just another minority with typical minority issues” is what casual racism is all about

It is worth noting that the folks who advocate for the status quo with respect to elite school admissions find a lot of friends in the Trumpist community.

The reason is because they hate Black folks WAY more than they hate you, and you do a good job of keeping them out of "their" schools.

But they still hate you enough to commit atrocities against you given the opportunity. They are using you.

In this day and age, issues are so complex that there's bound to be an overlap across all groups For example, I've read somewhere that the Black community is for the most past anti-immigration. Guess what? So are the Trumpers!

We know how to navigate this as much as you do..

1) The claim of "most TJ parents are here illegally" is not one shared by the vast majority of pro-reform individuals, and certainly not of groups advocating for reform. It's a disgusting and manifestly untrue statement that is expressly refuted by evidence.

2) The claim of "far too many TJ kids having mental health issues" is 100% true, but is not an anti-Asian racist claim because those mental health issues are in no way limited to the Asian population at TJ. Indeed, those issues are probably underreported within TJ's Asian community because of the stigma attached to mental health issues among those communities.

3) "They cheat and prep" are two different claims. Tons of people prep from across communities, but when you have 133 students who are all of Indian descent that all are claimed as success stories by ONE company that specializes in TJ prep, it's a short leap from there to "Asian students benefit disproportionally from TJ prep opportunities". The cheating piece is another story entirely. Again at TJ, that cuts across demographics as well.

There is a far greater level of casual racism that comes from people who presume that students from underrepresented groups are less likely to thrive at TJ because they aren't forced to reach a certain combination of percentile scores on a battery of standardized tests that they'll be far less familiar with than the kids who spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours doing prep work.

It is SO hard to argue with people who don’t know what they’re talking about, but...

1) Race-blind and race-neutral are two different things. The old process was race-blind. Learn the difference and return when you’re better informed.

2) An easy way to find anti-Black resentment on these forums is to find the goons who buy into the comparison between TJ and the damn NBA. Come on now.

You are not making any sense. The point is the current admission policy doesn't give any group any preference based on race. A test is race blind, race neutral, whatever you wants to call it. The new policy is not. NBA is a very successful enterprise and being celebrated worldwide. Only a racist person like yourself would view it as anti-Black. I am for the current successful NBA and its race neutral "admission" policy. I don't view them as black basketball players. I view them as the best players in the world. If you had your way on everything, NBA would adopt a racial quota and become a failure. Do you have the intelligence to get it now?

This NBA thing is totally ridiculous.

There is a HUGE amount of data available to assess each player. The team needs diversity in various skills.

The analogy to TJ admissions would be to choose the 5 tallest players. See where that gets you.

The analogy to TJ would be to have your kid practice free throws starting in 2nd grade. TJ will choose the kids who make the highest percentage of free throws.

Both of these are actually pretty appropriate analogies to the testing model, for different reasons. And both would have a strong chance to result in pretty horrible basketball teams - most commonly the second because it's pretty easy for really mediocre kids to get really good at shooting free throws.
