They are not a ridiculous idea. I just don't think that community pools have the gutter system to be able to hang them. I do know that they are expensive but if they really are about $1000 a piece and you would need six of them, they are not completely out of the question. I just think that they are a LOT more.
$6,000 absolutely would be out of reach for our community pool. It took about 5 years to raise half that much for a new slide. Other needs would come WAY before touchpads. Nevermind that they're more expensive than that, and there's nowhere to put them at our gutter-less pool anyhow.

Touchpads are not fool proof as many kids do not push hard enough on them or miss the pad completely. If you go to USA swim meet - they have 2 back ups, in case they don't register a time - plunger timer and stop watch.

The only people who say this are those whose kids are not fast swimmers or don’t do it as one of their main sports. You would never say the same about the sport your kid actually cares about/has talent in.
We care, but we will not compete in any competitions at least till next year. It is my child's main sport and they aren't fast but enjoy it. The competitive parents like this one take a lot of the fun out of it.

Except there are only so many meets and it is a very intense season. Missing a time is a big deal. And some kids only swim in one or two A meets during the season.
That does depend on where you swim. I’ve never felt it is intense and our swimmers can pretty much swim in each A meet if they are available. Heck, sometimes we are asking neighbor kids who are members of the club if they will fill a spot for at least that Saturday.
What team are you on? I actually know people that would like to join a pool with a team like that.
Sure, I'll share. Rolling Valley. https://www.mynvsl.com/team/rollingvalley
