It is a lie, ESPECIALLY if it's asked in that same city they're currently living. The obvious implication is "where did you grow up/ where are your roots". People trying to find out the town that truly raised and shaped you.
it's disingenuous at best, and I'm curious why anyone would engage in it.

You are FROM New York if you grew up there, period. You LIVE there if you live there at the moment.
Stop playing dumb, people.
It’s not always that simple.
I’ve lived in the following places:
Buffalo, NY — up to age 8
Westchester County, NY — age 8-14
NYC — 14-18 (parents still live there)
DC (in the District) — 18-25
Chicago — 25-27
DC (in NoVA, the District, and now MoCo) — 27-34 (present)
So where do I say I’m from?
You're from New York and you currently live in the DC area. This is easy.
NY state, yes, but it’s usually not sufficiently specific to just say what state you’re from when you’re talking to other Americans.

Or they're just ashamed because they come from a dump where everyone has bad breath because of meth mouth. Oh well.
I'm impressed by people who work their way out of impoverished rural areas. Not so impressed by people who never left the second tier city they grew up in and develop a chip on their shoulder because they take pride in well, nothing.
Maybe because you're from that place. And if you are proud, good for you. It's better than the people who lie and try to hide the reality of the dumps they crawled out of, which is a lot of people on here.
Yeah, I grew up in the hopeless ghetto of Alpine, NJ. So what's wrong with "crawling out of a dump"? You seem to be really upset that "outsiders" have the audacity to move. This might be why people don't want to tell you where they're from.
Never heard of it. Maybe that's why don't want to tell people? Anyway... pretty sad behavior.
I tell people where I'm from. You keep making bizarre assumptions.
Good. Then it doesn't apply to you. Own whatever rathole you came out of
Can you answer a simple question? So what's wrong with "crawling out of a dump"? You seem to be really upset that "outsiders" have the audacity to move. This might be why people don't want to tell you where they're from.
And yes, Alpine, NJ is certainly a rathole, you got me there!

Aka someone who grew up in Utah, but is living in NYC, and when they meet someone new and asked, the say "New York".
Why do you do it? Is it shame about your hometown? Wishing you could have grown up in someplace more sophisticated?
