The double standard between this thread and the cruise line grandpa thread (off topic) is astonishing. I’m following both.

So many over there think his remorse is enough/no charges needed. Over here, not so much.

In both cases, someone got dead because someone did something careless/reckless. Why the double standard?

The family is now suing the woman, Trump (!), and the U.K. Foreign Office. And they say Americans are litigious!

Just another European trying to rip off an American. It was an accident. I hope disallows themftom coming back into the USA.

Yeah, because that's way more heinous than crushing the internal organs of a 19-year-old with your SUV driven on the wrong side of the road.

I’m no Trump fan but wth does he have to do with this? They are pissed she had immunity and are trying to circumvent it. They claim they just want to talk to her but only on their terms. They are in the news practically everyday with some new statement by their lawyer. Every avenue they have tried has been a dead end. I highly doubt she will be extradited and I think they know it.

They are trying to build pressure domestically to get the UK to issue an extradition warrant. The UK can still issue it, even if she had diplomatic immunity while in the UK. Her diplomatic immunity is over. This will prevent her from traveling abroad, as other countries would extradite her if they honor UK extradition requests.

It's the only move they have right now. I don't blame them.

They may get the U.K. to charge her, but she will never return to the U.K. The NSA told them this bluntly in front of Trump. At some point they are just pounding a brick wall. I guess it makes them feel better. I don’t think it would make me feel better.

What a horrible example she has set for her children. Cause a grievous accident resulting in the death of someone young innocent son than cut and run. She deserves the result. Face your mistakes. Own up. UK is a friendly nation.

Yes, her young children will benefit greatly from their mother spending 1-2 years in a U.K. prison.

Lots of other parents have had to serve time. Why is she better than anyone else? Perhaps time would be reduced? The stain of that crime will permeate her life if she doesn’t own up.

Much say in what? Trump's attempted photo op? Or the negotiations over how and when she is finally going to return to Britain to take responsibility for her actions?

She’s not ever going back. This is all for show by the U.K. govt to appease the family and say they tried. I’m not sure what the Dunn’s thought would happen by “meeting with Trump.”

The US is not going to extradite her and she’s be insane to go back willingly. I’m shocked this story is even still in the news.

I agree. It was a terrible accident. She did cooperate with the police, and wasn't barred from returning to the U.S. She also left 3 weeks later. A lot of this is trial by media. I'm sure at this point she is doing what her lawyer advises.

Of course she should go back and face the consequences for her actions. WTF?

Actually, the US Government/Embassy advised her and the family to leave and are advising her not to return to the UK. So what she "should" do is a lot more complicated than your feelings on the matter.

Not "my feelings" - just basic ethics and morality. Sorry you struggle to see that.

I don't struggle to see that. I am capable of having empathy for both parties here. The woman made a horrible horrible mistake and I have no doubt that she knows this and will live with it for the rest of her life. She stayed for 3 weeks after the accident and was cooperative. She ultimately left under the strong advice and instruction of the US Government who sent her family to the UK in the first place. They are advising her now not to return to the UK. Was she supposed to refuse them? Is she supposed to openly defy them now? They provide her housing and her family's livelihood. To vilify her over this one aspect of the situation without acknowledging the complex circumstances is absurd.

Yes. Yes, she should. Otherwise, she will never get past it. She needs this to move on as well. Imagine having this hang over your head for the rest of your life. Stop running and go face the consequences.

You are NUTS. The US Government is the only employer her husband has ever had. His skill set is highly specialized and no doubt he wants and needs to retain his employment. They will not, nor should they, go against the advice of the US Government. That would be extremely self-destructive.

She will receive counseling. The family will receive a new assignment, likely domestic for a while, they will perhaps change their last name. And in a few years most people will have forgotten. Laura Bush became first lady for crying out loud and Ted Kennedy a senator, both after accidentally killing someone and serving no jail time or even being charged. And lets not forget that the UK has neither charged Sacoolas nor asked the US to extradite her (which they cannot do unless they charge her.)

I don’t think her kids will forget. Or herself. Or that poor family.

That's still not justice. She should go back and deal with the consequences of her negligence.

This won’t get then justice either. They say their number be goal is for her to return to the U.K. The US has repeatedly stated that isn’t going to happen.

Here's a fair trade off: let me run over your kid with my car and then I flee justice. In exchange, you can lecture all of DCUM on the proper way to handle such a situation.

Seems like a good exercise in humility for everyone.

Well according to the posters on the cruise line baby death thread, killing someone by accident is punishment enough. You shouldn’t be charged for your carelessness.

A he didn’t cut and run
B he was charged with negligent homicide (?) some charge showing blame
