This seems to me more like steady progress with neighborhood families since 2013 than this weird concept of "flipping" (way too implicit racism there). Maybe there is an inflection point, maybe there isn't. But there has been 5 years of steady IB growth. We'll see what the 2018-2019 number are when they are released later this year. I'm expecting a number in the low 30s, though the increasing class size due to the Eaton influx could change that.

I was told that the incoming 6th grade class will be majority IB.

Majority IB or majority from feeders?

Answered previously in thread. expected to have 90% of students coming from feeders for 6th grade - same as last year (not represented in the #s above). From the feeder schools, Eaton has been around 60% IB, Stoddert 80%, Key & Mann around 85%, and Hyde was 24% IB last year (with renovation IB went down). The make up of the 6th at Hardy tho is not a direct mix & the schools are different sizes - so around 50-60 kids coming from Eaton, 40ish from Stoddert, 15-20 from Mann, 10ish from Key and ? from Hyde to equal around 130 of the 145 kids in 6th grade. So, the IB % will likely be then around 70% for this cohort - but the % of IB from Stoddert will soon be zero, and % IB from Eaton has gone down with each class cohort too, so will be more like 75% soon.

Not commenting or valuing, just doing the math.... (worth noting, Eaton's PARCC scores (with 60% OOB) are pretty similar to Mann's etc (with 85% OOB)...)

Don't understand the bolded. Why will the IB % from Stoddert be zero?

When he got to the school he spent a lot of time in the classrooms observing the teachers. He has a community open house tomorrow I believe. You can stop in if you want to see for yourself.

Is does he/Hardy provide good support for the super-smart kids?

There is tracking (esp for Math), I think it is similar to how it is done at Deal.

Anyone with experience with Hardy and the new principal? From what I have heard, the school has undergone a number of changes over the last few years.

Appreciate any thoughts!

Rachel

Most schools that feed Hardy are "neighborhood schools". Most of the kids in the neighborhood attend the local elementary - and everything hangs around that. It is a traditional neighborhood experience. We were at a charter - and moved to our school that is mostly neighborhood kids. It changes EVERYTHING. The stress of getting out in the morning, picking up in the afternoon, afterschool activities, friendships, sleepovers, walking to friends houses etc etc etc.

If you are on the fence with MV - that you are considering your neighborhood school and eventually Hardy - I would recommend that you move the kids to your neighborhood school. Yes - Hardy will be a different experience than DCI - you need to just pick what you think is right for your family - and do it.

We're at different schools, but changing from a charter to our neighborhood was a shock, in a very lovely way. Impromptu playdates, carpooling, friendships - we loved our charter and the diversity, but the sense of community at the neighborhood school just 'feels' really lovely.

Join the line , a bunch of us at Mann are also looking forward to Hardy. I think Hardy is going to grow really quickly. Hardy is now good enough to save the 40K on private tuition.

We live around the corner from Hardy and have a baby who will be at Hardy in about 9 years. I hope the uniforms are still around! It makes getting dressed in the AM much easier.

I LOVE uniforms especially for a girl.

Can you explain this? Reduces peer pressure to dress in age-inappropriate ways?

No PP, but for us - yes! For my son, it would be a tee shirt and jeans - the uniform doesn't really change things much. But for my daughter, it stops me from having to deal with 'revealing' clothing. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned.
