This is why Jews have not been afraid of the small, small number of people like those that marched in Charlottesville.
We know there are lots and lots of anti-semites in liberal government cities.
Lots? One NOI member whose bullhorn holder was just forced to quit. It's actually a pretty marginal group.
It's not though, especially on college campuses. The extreme hatred for Israel has often morphed into a threatening environment for Jews more broadly.
Why are you changing the subject from "liberal government cities" to "college campuses"? If anti-Semitism is running amok in liberal cities, there should be enough examples in those cities without needing to change the subject. Also, while sometimes opposition to Israeli policies overlaps with anti-Semitism, it is also true that proponents of Israel sometimes use allegations of anti-Semitism to stifle legitimate criticism. This could be a continuous debate in itself and is completely off-topic to this thread.

Yup. This is what I've been trying to get across when liberals talk about the neo-Nazi groups on the alt-right, and proudly exclaiming how you don't find outright hatred like that on the left. No, I say, the minuscule number of people who marched in Charlottesville is nowhere near as concerning to me as the tolerance (or minimizing) of the antisemtitsm on the left. The very fact that White, already widely criticized for disrespect to Jews, can stuff his face while the rabbi is pleading for help in the face of antisemtism among DC leaders speaks to that very thing.
I feel you. From my own personal perspective am I frustrated if a video surfaces of a cop shouting racial expletives while beating black man who is not resisting arrest, heck yeah the outright bigotry is disgusting, but I totally get where you’re coming from cause I’m more angered by the tolerance of other officers who don’t say shit and allow such individuals to have a gun and a badge and patrol minority communities knowing what kind of people they are. I definitely feel you. But just like it’d be overzealous on my part to go full-fledged N.W.A and say, “F___ the police!” cause that attitude only exacerbates the problem the same applies to this, “F____ the liberals!” attitude. It don’t help shit. We gotta uproot out the weeds by all means we can’t piss on the whole damn lawn.

One word: Good.
I second that

The Council has breakfasts prior to Council sessions that are informal meetings. They aren't broadcast, but are open to the public. This morning, there was discussion of a resolution condemning hate speech. Twelve of the thirteen members present (Trayon White wasn't there at that time) supported the resolution. The only opponent was Elissa Silverman who didn't think the resolution went far enough. She demanded action rather than mere words. Silverman, Cheh, and Grosso all called for Josh Lopez to be removed from the Housing Commission. At some point, a Jewish faith leader interrupted them and yelled about Jews being called "termites". It was eventually agreed that Mendelson would draft a letter to Mayor Bowser asking her to remove Lopez and then circulate the letter for signatures. He is concerned that not all CMs will sign it.
There is video of Rabbi Herzfeld interrupting them here:

The Council then gathered on the Wilson Building stairs in an impromptu condemnation of hate speech.
The Council is also planning a visit to the Holocaust Museum and possibly the African American Museum. Finally, Brianne Nadeau is working with Bowser to plan an event on May 16 to learn about Jewish and African-American histories.
Edit to add: here is video of the statement on the steps of the Wilson building which included a specific reference to the anti-Semitic remarks previously spoken there:

WTH? White just kept right on eating his breakfast while Rabbi Herzfeld spoke--pretty disrespectful.
The Rabbi also put out a strong statement on our neighborhood listserv. I agree that strong action is needed re: recent anti-Semitic statements, and am glad that Lopez has been forced to resign.

Glad to hear it. (OP here.) We need more black neighbors, and non-Jews in general, to speak up as you have. When Jews complain about antisemitic behavior, far too often we are told we're making mountains out of molehills and just causing problems.
I also noticed White acting disrespectfully in the face of the Rabbi's impassioned plea. This is also why I think a stronger reprimand of some sort needs to be sent White's way. Given his actions over the last several days, including his adamant refusal to condemn the Farrakhan speaker's vile anti-Jew rhetoric, it's almost as if he is intentionally trying to demonstrate his disdain for Jews.
At least Lopez is out.
