I'd add Bobby Vans on 15th to this.

+2 founding fathers is by far the most overrate restaurant I’ve ever eaten at in my 46 years.

Yes it's terrible but it's not technically overrated because it gets terrible ratings. I occasionally have to go there for lunch and it's passable at lunchtime if you have low expectations.

I HATE Founding Farmers.

I do like Le Diplomat though.

Founding farmers is terrible

It was good when it first opened but has really gone downhill.

And heading out to the 'burbs... I'd heard good things about American Prime at Tyson's but was vastly underwhelmed.

Yeah, apparently every Midwestern city blows DC's restaurant scene away.

You'll pardon me if I take all of these claims with a large grain of artisanal salt.

Pretty sure this PP isn’t saying Midwest restaurants are better. Maybe NY, SF, etc?

Some of you need to travel more. Most major metro areas in this country (not just NY or SF and including many in the Midwest) have better food scenes than DC. Sorry if that disturbs your worldview.

I wonder what Tom Sietsema thinks of this thread since most of the restaurants on this thread are always recommended by him. He prob got special status

agree. thankfully my friend waited for me. it really was not all that.

That was a NICE friend! I waited with out-of-town foodie guests who really, really, really wanted to try it. It was a nice day so that part was okay but it was four-five hours (drive/park, wait and meal) that I will never get back. The food was fine and the service was fine but the whole experience just wasn't worth it to me.

I think the problem is that almost no restaurant, anywhere in the world, is worth a five hour wait. I had a similar experience at Bad Saint - it was nice but it didn't feel worth the hassle at all. We managed to walk in to Rose's Luxury at about 8:30pm on a Wednesday night, and because it was no hassle at all, it was a good experience. I thought the food was nice but I certainly wouldn't have thought it worth waiting for five hours for.

I completely agree and was going to post this myself. It's good, but not "top 5 restaurants in DC" good. And definitely overpriced.

+1 The meals that have truly knocked my socks off are the small family run restaurants. $20 or less per person and some of the best meals I've ever eaten. Definitely blow the boujee restaurants that get hyped up so much right out of the water.

This is me!

Frankly, I have not even heard of some of the restaurants named here. Admittedly, I am a little dated: there was a time when I was part of corporate life, had an entertainment budget and ate at all the "in" places which were invariably over-priced but I was not paying.

Nowadays, the small family run restaurants serve the best food - they are inexpensive with awesome food but little to no ambiance.

Yeah the whole wait outside for 3 hours do you can get in is too much. I don't care how great the actual food is-I'm not doing that. When you try that hard to make yourself special I think it backfires.

LOL. Sure. The person bragging about Skyline Chili and the rest of the fine dining in metro Cincinnati is well travelled, as are you, you precious little thing.

People enjoy trashing DC food because they are negative, awful people who trash everything and are so painfully unoriginal and without taste that they think trashing stuff leaves others with the impression that they are knowledgeable and superior. It doesn’t. If you can’t find exceptional food in DC you are a stupid, boring person. And in all likelihood you heard about DC food like 15-20 years ago and don’t actually go to restaurants.

You don’t disturb my worldview. You annoy me with your presence.

Mike Isabella? Is that you?

You sound about as awful as the DC restaurant scene.
