My high school kid at WallsHS says that from Day 1 was approached by fellow students wanting to sell him drugs.
Of course all high schools face this issue. But what do the adults in the building DO about it? Do they have any responsibility here?
Can you tell us more about the drug situation at Walls? How widespread is it?
Everyone knows that there's a lot of weed at Walls. Not as many harder drugs as at Wilson. News flash, there are students doing drugs in every high school in the city, public and private.
First of all I don’t even know what Walls is. What is it? Never heard of it so I’m starting to see we are in completely different worlds when we’re talking about privates. Secondly, no they’re not doing drugs during the school day at top privates when they should be in class. It’s just not happening during the day at school. Sorry. There are hundreds of privates and maybe some of the less competitive ones I am not familiar with have kids doing drugs at schools. I don’t know but I can tell you at the top privates, kids are not doing drugs during the day on campus. The schools are too small and they have teachers and security all over the place and the bathrooms are monitored and the classes are small and if you cut class you get suspended. They have serious consequences. It’s just not happening. You only have like two minutes between classes to get to the next place and the classes are so small you can’t just skip a class and not have a go unnoticed. Have you ever stepped foot in any of the top private schools? Many of the individual classes only have 15 or 16 kids in them. Participation is required as part of your grade so teachers would be very aware if someone was on drugs.

I have a kid in Wilson and one in private. Neither one is into the drug scene at either -- yes, both have them. Wilson has its own challenges with safety but my child has never felt unsafe at school. We read about it or hear about the safety issues rather than see them first hand. My private kid has had to deal with other issues like stealing and clique behavior. Both schools are infested with juuling and juuling IN class. I have found parents at both schools very disappointing with their approach to pot, though only at Wilson do I know parents who smoke pot with their kids which makes me. I will say that the private seems to come down harder on kids. I have found Wilson to not send a clear message regularly about unacceptable behaviors. Plus the going to school but not class is a big problem at Wilson, not at the private.
That is my take. No school is perfect but both my kids are happy where they are.
Doesn’t sound like a top private to me. There are hundreds of privates In this area so I have no doubt that there are issues that some of those privates But I have never heard of a safety issue or fistfight at the very top privates.
OMG the stuff that people post on here - so fights only happen at less elite privates! If you've read this thread multiple posts on here from Wilson parents attest that they are not concerned about their kids safety - the concerns expressed on this thread about safety at Wilson, as best as I can tell, are entirely from private school parents who can't seem to drive through Tenleytown without seeing a person of color on a streetcorner and then shatting on themselves in their imported SUV driving their sheltered kids home to Bethesda/Chevy Chase.
I largely agree with you, but, as a Wilson parent, I think some of the post defending the school are a bit Pollyanna-ish. One poster said something like it's just youthful exuberance on display after school. It is more than that and the school does have some real issues that you wouldn't find at a private or most suburban schools. That doesn't mean those schools don't have their own issues of course, but people can acknowledge problems at Wilson without being racist pearl clutchers.
I understand there is an incentive to defend the school when unreasonably attacked, but some of the defenses are almost as liberal with the truth as the attacks themselves.
