Supporting diversity does not mean that you have to sell the home and go move into gang turf. It means you want diversity. It's the conservatives who think that minorities are all criminals and therefore you equate the two.

But unfortunately too much in DC is more about the old school Marion Barry way of doing things, and city jobs about "not my job, man" and tied to political patronage and union structures as opposed to actually doing what needs to be done.

School system is a prime example. Even General Becton couldn't fight the system.

If we truly wanted to break the cycle of poverty in DC the city should focus on truly integrative services, where all agencies coordinate and track what's going on with poor families, with sharing of data across all agencies, whether school, housing, SNAP and other benefits, medical/healthcare/mental health, unemployment, domestic violence, and to have structured, coordinated intervention teams to work with them to get them to stay functional, reduce fraud, et cetera. Those kinds of approaches sound expensive but have actually been more effective while reducing costs in some communities. DC currently suffers from far too many disjoints. Can't even get the 311 and DDOT people to coordinate on potholes. Lots more that can and should be done - don't tell me it's "political suicide." No, what they do in DC is push notions like "oh, we'll just push the high performing kids into underachieving schools and that will magically solve all the problems" while ignoring the lousy curriculum, bad teachers and bad behavior.

Or, "we'll just push the homeless into every neighborhood to solve the problem of DC General being lousy with roaches, lice, bedbugs and other critters" while not bothering to deal with the social supports and services needed to improve the hygiene conditions that led to bug infestation in the first place.

DC needs to provide a lot of wrap-around services to help the poor. But instead our great and wonderful elected officials funnel hundreds of millions to their friends while pretending to serve the poor. And guess what, those of us citizens who know what's up are mutinying against Mayor Bowser for that. We need Council to stand up and do the same.

So I guess what we are saying is that we know the conservatives will fight against helping the low SES in any form whatsoever, the liberals will help, but cautiously and with some NIMBYISM - which leaves nobody but you, sitting in a corner by yourself pointing fingers and attacking everyone else.

White liberals will tell you that their school is "diverse" because there are two Black kids in a single class, but if you asked them to send their child to a school with only White kids in a class, they would turn tail in a heartbeat. There have been actual studies that show white folks claim to want diversity, but their actual threshold is something like 11%. Anything more than that feels too Black/brown even though the actual racial breakdown of the United States is not 89% white.

All this except 8 percent is the tipping point.

Half of North Arlington goes to Washington Lee High School. It's 58% minority.

The other half goes to Yorktown High School, which is 35% minority.
