Hmmm. Thank you. Good to know. DS is thinking of coming up with something different than a straight theater major to differentiate himself. But it's good to know there may be some OOS options. The problem for us is our budget is capped at $25K per year, so 1/3 off a private is not going to be enough. sigh.

Yes! My kid went to Alabama for free.


How did your child like Alabama? My kid can go for free, too, but I don't know much about it. My gut says he'd be a fish out of water there. We are Jewish so not sure if there are many Jews there.


There are a fare number of Jews at Bama--somewhere around 700 or so.

Here's a good tip: Always check to see if there's a Hillel House on campus. That's a sign that there's a Jewish population.

Years ago, I was a Beneficial Hodson scholar at Hopkins. I believe it covered 60% of tuition. I believe there were 18 undergraduates in my class that got the award.

Nowadays its just called The Hodson Trust Scholarship. It provides up to $31,500 per year to approximately 20 exceptional first-year students. These scholarships are automatically renewed for three subsequent years of full-time undergraduate study provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 grade point average.

DD turned down a "lesser" Ivy. It's OK. DD is doing fine, no, great at her no-name college. She's got a great internship this summer. In the long term, a talented kid is going to be successful anywhere s/he goes. And saving the $$ by sending her to a less expensive college is a huge break for us and for her. No debt whatsoever. Yea!!
