Some of you people are ridiculous. Let grandma pick the nickname she wants to go by. I've heard Mom-mom before. The last time I heard it it was given by a little toddler who was told that the grandma was "Mom's mom" and she just started calling her Mom-mom. It's perfectly fine. There will not be a confusion over who is the mother and who is the grandmother.

Both my mom and mother in law wanted to be called grandma. That’s what we called them until the first kid could talk. Then, guess what? The kid made up the name. One was mema, which that grandmas didn’t want to be called but that’s what the kid called her.

OP sounds insecure and controlling. In my mother tongue, the word for maternal grandmother is literally mom mom.

Also, OP’s kid is 8 now. Hopefully she has learned to let go a little by now.

My mother goes by "Mom mom" because that's what the first grandchild called her. My kids were never confused, nbd.

In lower Delaware (Sussex County) the grandmothers are called Mom-Mom Smith and Mom-Mom Jones.

Mom-Mom is pronounced kind of fast.

It sounds almost like MumMum pronounced fast.

My cousins always called their grandmother MawMaw and I hated it until my daughter's dad's mom wanted to be called MomMom. I let my daughter call her whatever she wants but you're not getting a MomMom out of me. I call her MawMaw instead. You were not a great mom to your son, you don't deserve to get the title twice over.

Mama and mom-mom are too close. Tell her you’ll support any other name she picks. Granny, nana, bubbie, ya-ya, grams, whatever weird name she wants, but it needs to not be easily confused with mama.
