Yes, you're right. A hetero family is not just the same as a gay family. A hetero family has a mother and a father. Or just a mother. Or just a father. Or a grandmother and a grandfather. Or a mother, a father, and a birth mother who lives somewhere else. Or a mother and a father, living in different households. Or a mother and a stepfather, or a father and a stepmother. Oy. So confusing for children at a young age. Which is why I think that private schools should only admit the children of married heterosexual couples who live together. If they get divorced, or even just if one parent gets posted temporarily overseas? Boot 'em out. Innocent kids shouldn't have to be confronted by this kind of stuff.

We have had beloved gay family members and friends in our children's lives from the get-go. The kids don't find anything confusing about them. If there are kids who are confused about gay families it's because those families don't jibe with the bigotry and prejudices they've learned at home. Our children enjoy our friends' hospitality and love, along with that of their uncle (their favorite babysitter). They don't find them different in some kind of bad way just because they are not in the majority.

So, if your kindergartner comes home and says that his/her best friend has two moms or two dads and he/she really wants to have a playdate with the new best friend, what do you do? Since that family is 'parading' around who they are by just existing. Are the black families 'parading' around who they are because they are living lives as themselves? How about the Latino families? Are you tired of them parading around, too? Indoctrinating kids into thinking that, gosh, there are different people in the world? And in an independent school where the percentage of African American students is larger than the percentage nationally of African Americans in the general population, how dare they parade around, right? That's not reality to have 48% kids of color, with a 25 percent African American population, when the national population is only 13%--why are schools 'stacking' their populations in unrealistic ways, parading around that diversity?
