When DS was little I made a "goodnight" playlist and put this in it. It was just sleepytime music; he was too young for words, and I wanted it to be stuff I liked.
Now he's 7, has his own iPod, and I heard him singing this around the house the other day. I smiled, but I also hoped I'm not sticking him with grownup themes as a youngster.

I found that gut-wrenching at first. I'm a pretty big Warren fan. But after listening to it a lot, after my mentor died and then my father too, I now find it kind of comforting.

Me, too! I was going to post this if no one else did.

Another vote for tears in heaven. In fourth grade, my music teacher died, and that song was played at school and I was sobbing and really embarassed .

Another one is Jumper by Third Eye Blind, particularly if you know someone who committed suicide. Surprised nobody mentioned that song yet.

For just sad, Tears In Heaven is gut-wrenching. I usually have to switch to a different song on the radio.
For breakup sad, Keith Urban's You'll Think Of Me had me in tears because it's filled with so much emotion and angst (and I married my high school sweetheart --so never suffered a breakup heartache).

If you're an empty-nesting mom, then this Lullaby for Wyatt gets me.

Oh, and In the Ghetto (Elvis Presley) and Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt.
