Sorry you can’t recognize a real talent.
I won’t even bother asking who you find funny.

They need a new model at a scaled back cost. They probably don’t need a band (or maybe just a cheaper, smaller band). They probably need to shift the celebrity costs to the celebrity (or film/album/project they are promoting). And the host can’t be paid as much. Otherwise they need to go to a podcast like platform—where some celeb hosts are making tons of money without the big production costs.
Personally, I hope he brings back his Colbert Report persona—perhaps on the Daily Show at first—to skewer this administration that is destroying our democracy and the rule of law.
That character was really funny and Colbert seems to have lost the ability to be funny, unfortunately.

I still find him hilarious. Different strokes for different folks. I guess CBS was too afraid of Trump to keep him on.
Same! Love him.
Despite what that magas on this thread want to believe Colbert is so talented and really does such a great job with all his interviews.
Then why was his show not profitable?
It was profitable.

It’s easy to find plenty of links that talk about how it has been losing roughly $40 million per year at this point. If I weren’t driving right now, I would post some.
I have not seen anything that counters these assertions.
Why cancel now? CBS had ample opportunity to do so. Why now? Because of the merger. Trump can’t handle his feelings being hurt.
They didn't "cancel" the show this week.
He will get to finish his contract. They simply are not renewing the contract
So why announce it now?
Colbert announced it. Maybe he's in on the plot to suppress himself?
No, he was told by CBS of their decision. Why did they tell him now?
To give him time to make other plans.
To give themselves time to create and advertise a new show to replace him.
Duh.
They’re not replacing him or the show.
So you are saying CBS will have an hour of blank air time during Colbert's old time slot? Mmk

He left the Colbert Report because he was tired of doing that character

Well, they did not “cancel” it now. They indicated that they will not be renewing it after its current contract expires on schedule next year. They are simply acknowledging the obvious trend that the traditional late night variety show format is not sustainable in 2025. They do not anticipate that Colbert could make it profitable again, nor that anyone else could.
And corporate mergers and restructuring tend to have a way of encouraging these hard decisions when various business units are under increased scrutiny to put their financial pictures in the best possible light.
