You should be able to get an idea based on feedback you’ve received from teachers during conferences and asking for feedback. If you’re unsure what type of LOR your child got then I’d guess you’re not very involved.

How do people know what their letters of recommendation were like? Our school would not let us see them, have others had different experiences?

Update: We were just notified today that there is a spot open for her!

Yay! So excited for you

In response to the type of kid who gets FA-

My child got 60% off both schools they applied at. Average grades and average athlete. However, DC is a lovely person and would shine in any cohort. LOR were amazing and shadow visits ended with HoS finding me and speaking about my child’s personality and manners. Being pleasant and respectful to peers and adults goes a long way.

FWIW My husband and I were both shocked by the FA offered because we expected that large aid packages would go to stand out athletes or academics.

My daughter applied for 5th grade at GDS and is on the waitlist. She has the best scores in her school, strong recommendations, and is very talented in extracurricular activities. I know 5th grade is not a main entry point, but I’d like to know if she can get off the waitlist. Has anyone on the waitlist ever gotten into GDS?

Anyone ever? Of course. Likely? No.

you should call and ask them. They will be truthful to the extent that they know.

We were waitpooled as well. I’m curious how the admissions process was for your family?

Honestly it went really well! We went to all of the events, had a great parent interview and generally had a good feeling after multiple positive interactions with the admissions team. I think this year was super competitive…but was still hoping we had a shot.

Schools are really good at creating a warm, comfortable admissions experience. It has no bearing on if they let in your child. It just means they’re good at their jobs.

DC is also on 5th grade WL. Lots of applicants for a non-entry yr. Does she have other options? With only 6-10 for entire school usually getting off WL and given that GDS WLs most applicants (v not getting in), even if a spot opens so much depends on what kind of kid the class needs. If your daughter is strong applicant, and re-applies, though, it will help that she applied this year.

Norwood had a TON of siblings applying for pre-K this year so I imagine there were very few spots open. Definitely apply again for K!!

Thank you, that’s reassuring. I spoke with director of admissions who said she would flourish at Norwood but there was just a very high demand for pre K and her application could be fast tracked for K which seems like a good sign.

That's a very good sign!

I believe the waitlist letter said they admit 6-10 off the waitlist across grades so, yes, it happens, but it does not look very good
