FWYW, both had 3 years of one foreign language and 2 years of another foreign language

It's all good news as your DC can move forward on their college journey! My DD has made the decision that a deferral means she will go where she's been accepted and is excited about that! She will not be waiting for the next round. Congrats to all the new Hoos!

Michigan is fantastic. She can move ahead with it as her top choice and if Virginia comes through, she can re-evaluate. Congratulations on Michigan!

+1. In-state VA friend was waiisted at UVA but in at Michigan. She was a week into classes at Michigan when she was admitted to UVA. She packed up and went to UVA and never looked back (and her parents were thrilled with in-state tuition.

even if this was in the 90s, this couldn’t happen. I was waitlisted myself and they sent a letter in the summer saying it’s over.

The parents were excited about in state tuition but also clearly signed a contract to pay the first year OOS at Michigan? And the slot was still available at uva?

I've seen this story repeated in other UVA threads on this board and College Confidential.

If you agreed to the installment plan, withdrawing from Michigan only costs a couple of months' installment. And the contract is for the university to provide an education and ultimately a diploma, not for the student to attend (LOL!).

Any sense of what percent they defer. They admitted 25% instate. What percent do they defer? Ballpark guess?

It may be an old story. I got off a wsitlist for law school when I had already started elsewhere (was in orientation week). But that was the 90s.

This. Already paid the full fall tuition, moved kid to Michigan, moved her out, paid second fall tuition at UVA, and had the kid miss a week of school and orientation at UVA?

Strongly disagree. UVA is a great value. Compare $40k all in to $96k for USC or $94k for my SLAC. That's a delta of $224k. If paying out of taxable income you would have to make $300k or more to fund the difference. Instead we banked the difference, which compounded, so now can pay for law school. I am very grateful for VA's in-state schools, whoch all of my children attended.
