We need send Bostic to every high school.

Teacher at Northwood here. I love Dr. Bostic and think he is a wonderful person and will be a great principal but I also have to speak some truth to the over praise of him.

He unofficially took over in November and student behavior got significantly worse. We started having more fights and the amount of kids in the halls increased. He lacked the structures of an experienced principal. Also, his communication style is very confusing and he stacks too much information into multiple links. I think he will get much better at this but I am also very glad to have Dr. Garrick back in charge.

I'm curious by what mechanism would the arrival of a new principal with dift practices lead to an immediate increase in student fights in just a few weeks.

We didn't get NO letter.... should be We didn't get a letter.

What a pedantic response. The PP was obviously intentionally using a colloquialism. Condescend much?

I'm fully in support of sanctioning principals who think they can break the rules (such as ignoring mandatory training policies).

But I'm not sure the current set of policies are effective. I told my (AA) husband about the incident and he was really annoyed.

He said that he had two (AA) friends as a kid. Some troublemakers ran up to both of them separately and taunted them with the N word. One friend started chasing the troublemakers, threatening them, etc. And the other just repeated the word back to them calmly. From that point, the trouble makers kept harassing the first friend and basically just ignored the second. They were looking for response and got it from one but not the other.

I don't know how to reconcile this with our current situation. I certainly can't support a decision to not penalize troublemakers and not support those who were targeted. But it seems like it needs to be done matter-of-factly and consistently. But without the emotion that we've been displaying recently.

It should be an eye opener that there’s already something to report. Thankfully it’s not racism or related but it’s typical of other student issue that have been ongoing. It’s really night and day with the transparency. We are going to see change for the better.

Please share the letter!

Dear Wootton High School Staff, Students, and Families,

I apologize that this is my first formal communication to you, but in the spirit of transparency, I wanted to make you aware of a serious incident that occurred at Wootton yesterday afternoon.

I want to start off by thanking our security team for their support in addressing the situation. After lunch, two students engaged in a physical altercation, which resulted in one of the students sustaining an injury. Our investigation tells us that the fight was related to an ongoing issue between the two students. The altercation was witnessed by a group of students, who chose not to report it. Our security staff, as a part of their regular routines, recognized that an altercation was occurring and intervened immediately. Both students were given consequences in alignment with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct for their actions, and we will also be following up and assessing consequences for the students who encouraged the altercation. Fighting and encouraging others to engage in a fight are unacceptable at Wootton and in any MCPS school. This type of behavior will not be tolerated.

I will close by reminding everyone that they can anonymously report any school or student safety concerns, including mental health concerns, through the Maryland Center for School Safety's Safe Schools Tipline (1-833-MD-B-SAFE / 1-833-632-7233).

This is a good letter! I wish my principal communicated this clearly and transparently. I don't know why Wootton parents are complaining.

+100. Can we get all Principals to have their communication be at this level.

Yeah the timing of it was impeccable. The only kids I know that are even aware of the impact of swastika would have are the kids who have been indoctrinated from birth to believe they are victims and the people are perpetually out to get them by smearing this all overt them. Nobody is. In my Middle Schooler’s friend group, the only kids he has ever heard use the N-word are the students of color themselves. And it’s widely known that they get a pass the same way that Asian kids use Asian specific slurs as a way of reclaiming power and the white kids joke about being white kids.

You sound like an anti-Semite among other things. My child was not indoctrinated from birth to believe he’s a victim. Swastikas are offensive. We live in a world of increasing anti-semitism. I really do hope you’re not a parent at Wooton and just a troll.

No, these are the real feelings of Wootton parents. There is serious trends of both Anti-Black and antisemitism running through the parent community over there and even within the ranks of its PTSA leadership. It's sad and scary.

I’ve seen one. One

Since you and your colleagues are slow: https://wjla.com/news/local/maryland-montgomery-county-public-schools-mcps-wootton-high-principal-placed-on-leave-racial-slur-incident-parents-douglas-nelson-ptsa-black-and-brown-coalition-for-educational-equity-and-excellence-#

An anti-Black racial slur was found written on the desk of a Thomas S. Wootton High School student on December 3 according to Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) officials.

This incident comes only seven months after another racist incident at the same high school. On May 15, a Wootton student printed the N-word 1,000 times on 1,000 pieces of paper.

That's two. The recent one that saw the n-word written on the desk after the student went to the bathroom, the May incident where a student printed the n-word 1,000 times.

1 + 1 = 2

Therefore there were two incidents within 12 months that Principal Doug Nelson failed to properly report and respond to. And that's why he got in trouble.

Got it now?

Really it's 1001 instances of hate speech.

Oh get real. And the kid who did the prints was black and it never left the printer. So let’s stop the anti-black agenda and the 1001 hate crimes.

And in that case it happened on a Wednesday, not reported by the staff member to the principal until Friday afternoon and the email went out on Monday saying they already identified the kid and they were handling the staff delay and the kid. So not sure how that was Nelson’s fault at all.

For the desk incident, a kid reported it. The teacher took a picture on their phone and then didn’t report it until the following day and Nelson reported it to CO the following day and sent an email out the next day. Supposedly he was grilling someone too hard on the incident and the kid’s parents complained.

Then the day of the cancelled pep rally an older sub in a class said the word when explaining the incident instead of saying n-word. That was on Friday afternoon and a student complained after the end of the school day. On Monday an email went out about that incident.

So in my opinion it seems that staff were more of an issue than the principal.

Yeah, a huge staff problem that teachers are reporting minor non-active misbehavior incidents within 48 hours instead of disrupting class or working overtime to coddle whiners.

Beautiful. You are a real-time example of the kind of Wootton parents who are behind the problematic culture at the school.

There is no problematic culture at this school. You guys are all race baiting and trying to create some kind of a war when all there is are hard-working parents who work full-time and wants their kids to excel and don’t want to be bogged down by all this DEI crap. MCPS needs to focus on the drugs and the violence and everything else will work itself out. Quit gaslighting us.

Enjoy your new Black interim principal. I’m sure you won’t berate and insult him by calling him a DEI hire, right?

What about Lakelands. Huge fight, killed pulls a knife and yells out the n-word multiple times.

It’s in every school and it has always been sadly. It is going to be 10 fold in the media now because every principal feels the need to send emails out and contact central office so they aren’t the next one to be placed on leave

Thanks to more vigilant reporting, were going to get "alarming trend in increasing incidents" (not true), instead of "good to be tracking what's happening on the ground", and the huge overblown public reaction (but not disciplining perpetrators) is going to motivate trolls to do more incidents.

Instead of bomb threats to get out of tests/classes, were going to get scribbled slurs.
