I despise Trump and everything he stands for. My wish is that our mayor and Council could finally be threatened enough by this administration to do what's right. When a homeless guy set up a tent village in our Ward 3 residential neighborhood the police would do nothing. In fact, service providers were sent out regularly to make sure he was “comfortable.” Our councilman was of course also useless. Eventually a major storm blew through and wrecked his camp and he moved on, but the trash remained. This city coddles criminals and homeless over the rights of taxpayers. It’s completely dystopian.

Pp, you do know that many residents were born in DC. We didn’t “move here.” There are also buildings here that pre-date the city becoming a federal district.

Early Americans literally died to give that to us, and you are all happy to give the little you have away with a smile on — an even bigger smile if it comes with the bonus of a tax benefit. Have some self-respect.

One-party rule doesn't mean anything. "Democrat" isn't a monolith—there are ten different posters on here who have professed to be Democrats who disagree with the Council/mayor on various policies. I am a Democrat who disagrees with the Council and the Mayor on various policies! Go out and promote the policies you like. Get like-minded candidates elected. The much maligned Charles Allen ran unopposed in his last election! Run for office! You can change it all tomorrow, friends. That's the democratic process. And if a majority of your neighbors disagree with you? That's the democratic process too. But for federal officials—elected by people all over the country EXCEPT those in DC—to step in and subvert the will of the people on local matters—that is tyranny, and no patriotic American could tolerate it. You don't have any say in the local governance of the people of Tennessee, or Maine, or Texas, or California, but you are happy to let their elected officials govern you? That's Parliament and the Colonies. Patrick Henry would be embarrassed to know you.

If you are do devoted to self-government, why did you move to the federal district established more than 200 years ago? And are you advocating for the return of most governments functions to the states? Because that's what Patrick Henry wanted.

The city council has proven they can’t tackle crime. Progressive criminal justice is an abject failure. The housing voucher program is a disaster where people take advantage of not paying their rent for years at the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in loses. I am a liberal who lives in dc. I can’t believe Trump won. But if there is one slight hope it’s that he cleans the city up and cracks the fk down on car jackers.

Trump has never improved anything anywhere ever so I am dubious

He’s a real estate developer so definitionally this is a false statement.

And your point is? Just building condos for the wealthy is an improvement? Building casinos??

I've been working downtown for over twenty years and seen the syringes in the parks. I 've seen the condoms in the alleys near the bars. They are all over the place. I hate to see what goes on at night. I've never stayed beyond four PM to know.

Individuals of DC have no responsibility for their own behavior? Its not like aliens are dropping these syringes and condoms, these are DC residents who need to be held accountable.

I hope that the Trump administration finally ends the homeless encampment along Rock Creek Parkway: tents, discarded couches, fires, garbage, open latrines. It’s outrageous and disgusting. I voted for Harris, but am so tired of the “Wokes” in the current administration who tolerate disorder.

I do not see Trump caring about anything he doesn’t profit from in some way.

I’m skeptical he will do anything. If he can punish carjackers and reduce that, it’d be great.

Time will tell if he will really do anything though.

Cleaning up the city would be a godsend. The amount of graffiti, trash, and tent compounds as one enters from 50/66 is shocking. As someone who's lived here since the 1990s, I can confidently say it never used to be this way. DC is a national embarrassment, and it doesn't take a genius to understand the root cause which shall not be named here because of the knee-jerk liberal reaction to telling the truth.

It's not just the city - drive into NoVA and things look decreipt. Weeds growing through concrete on major roads, including 66, 495, 28, and the Fairfax County Parkway. Bags of garbage strewn on the side of the road that take weeks to clean up, if they are at all. Potholes, uneven pavement. Growing crime (mostly catalytic converter thefts and break ins) and homelessness in neighborhoods that used to be crime free. We look like a nation in decline.

Not to mention the for-profit "beggars" at every intersection who are dropped off and picked updaily by their employers, or who drive themselves in the new cars to their preferred sites, while the County does nothing to discourage the practice.

Sadly I’ve observed this. They get handed their signs, so it’s not theirs.
But… I’ve also talked to one of them… seems like a nice guy… but clearly active delusions and mental illness that someone is exploiting.

Anonymous wrote:Everyone knows how to improve DC. It’s just a handful of extremists that stand in the way. A basic plan that is 100% within the control of the President.

1. Replace US Atty with someone who takes crime seriously and provide USAO with adequate resources to vigorously prosecute crimes.

2. Appoint judges who will not rule on evidence in contradiction with established 4th Amendment jurisprudence.

3. Expand role of Parks and Secret Service Police to more aggressively police throughout the city. But particularly to start enforcing public use of marijuana in parks throughout the city.

4. Direct Parks to be more vigorous about removing tents/encampments.

And in collaboration with Congress, the President can:

1. Roll back Charles Allen YRA amendment for “youth” under 25 years old.

2. USAO take over juvenile prosecution

3. Put MPD under Federal control, like courts and probation services. Reestablish undercover vice unit.

4. Take over responsibility for roads in downtown areas and proximity to the mall.

Anonymous wrote:The problem with your plan is that Trump does not actually want expanded or more effective government. He simply wants to endlessly and senselessly bloviate. Effective action requires actually delegating to decent staff. That’s not something Trump does.

Agree. Trump has zero interest in actually making anything better for those dreadful people who live in the District.

It's much much more to his advantage to leave it alone and just use it as a talking point about how awful Democrats are.
Especially black Democrats.
Especially black women Democrats.
(did you notice which university presidents got extra scrutiny last year? Pretty much all women. That's not an accident. This guy knows what sells to his base without having to say it out loud)

Sadly this. If only the new admin would make DC clean and safe in all quadrants. If only someone would fire this council and prosecute and sentence every crime. It’s all talk.

She does indeed have almost no appeal. I think we just have low expectations in this city.

Who’s your pick for mayor?

Bowser is not a good mayor but the reason that she’s still mayor is because there is no reasonable alternative.

No one else in the entire District of Columbia??

You are welcome to name one.

She/he who complains about what is should be the one to say what would be better.

Otherwise, it’s just lazy, no-accountability complaining.

If you’re not willing to name someone then you cannot name anyone and therefore you agree that there are no reasonable alternatives to Bowser but are too embarrassed now to admit it.

Nope. Just calling that person out. I hate people who complain just to be fashionable.
