I don’t quite understand the comment…in state UGA acceptance is like 50%.

It is a much tougher admit coming from the stronger public high schools and top private schools in state, because so many kids are applying due to HOPE.

Ok, I guess. Is it just free tuition? Is $10k for an instate kid from a top private particularly meaningful?

I mean, if I am paying $40k to send them to an Atlanta private, then for some reason avoiding $10k for instate tuition is meaningful?

I'm the PP you're responding to, and that is definitely a fair point! I think it's that they're avoiding $80k+ for a private college or $65k+ for out of state public.

Except it’s not like someone that sends their kid to Sidwell and lives in MD cares much about paying $85k for Harvard, so they aren’t even probably applying to UMD even though that’s only $27k in state.

I guess I’m trying to understand the psychology at play…perhaps the acceptable options within say 500 miles just aren’t there?

It is no where close to an Emory admit. That's what pp is saying.

I wasn't trying to say it is the same as Emory, but it's also no where close to 50% for kids applying from top publics (i.e. Northview, Walton, Lambert, etc.) or top privates. I don't live in Virginia, but based on comments here, it seems similar to the experience kids have graduating from TJ. I know UVA's acceptance rate is lower.

Parents are starting to realize that attending private schools like Lovett, Woodward, St. Pius, etc., can actually have a negative impact when applying to UGA and GT, as well as prominent out-of-state institutions. Many have moved their students to public high schools where they face less competition from achieving students.

Paying for Lovett or Woodward just to get into UGA doesn't make much sense.

Perhaps not to you, but many parents choose private K-12 for reasons other than college admissions.

Your kid will probably get an email this weekend- make sure they have everything you/they need to do this.
Housing priority is no joke.
5:30 am is too early but they won’t tell you exactly when it opens. So best be ready. And hit refresh.

It’s sad what you public school parents have to do.

Are you here to add anything or just troll? So weird. Move along to the private school boards then. Why waste your time here?

It's interesting to note that the HOPE scholarship program (the precursor to the Zell Scholarship) barely passed when voters approved it 51% to 49% in 1992.

HOPE also had income caps for its first two years ($66k and $100k) before the state removed the caps. Within the first few years of creating HOPE, the state began awarding merit-based scholarships to the children of very wealthy Georgia residents. It's a fascinating program on many levels.
