I signed my daughter up for metro clinic not knowing that it was a top club.... Will she be able to keep up?

It depends on the number of players trying out. You may have only one age group trying out (large number of players trying out), or you may have multiple age groups on the same court (smaller number of players registered for tryouts). Most clubs have a main court, where they collect the best players to see them playing together. They also have a bottom court, where they keep the less skillful players. You know they are interested in you if you end up on the top court. Your chances are smaller when you and up on the bottom court. Couches are looking for skill level, athleticism, coachability, and attitude. Height is important for a lot of clubs. Let me know if you are interested in a specific club and I may share experiences (if we have any).

Here is the answer recently posted on a different thread: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/15/1278528.page#30612756

"U14 is very competitive in all clubs. Moco has a lot of returners who want to make it back to their teams or climb one level within the club. If your daughter is comparable to a returner in all aspects, the returner will likely get the spot. Some teams lose a few players to better clubs, so that's a chance for players from other clubs to make a team. But these outsiders will compete with club players who want to trickle up from the bottom teams. If players trickle up, a few spots become available in the bottom teams. Those few spots will likely be taken by players from weaker clubs who want an upgrade. It is very unlikely to make a Moco team with no club experience, especially at the U14 level. To increase your chances to make a Moco team, go to their fall tryouts - that's where you will see some (but not all) of your competition."

Provide more specific details if you are looking for more specific answers.

This already contains information from last year's tryouts. Give me a good reason to use a new thread to repost information that I already posted on this thread last year.

It doesn't really matter what I think (or any other poster on DCUM). You decide whether it is a good choice for your family. Just don't pretend it is a good deal - go in knowing that they rip you off and they are laughing all the way to the bank. Someone just posted a link to a new Virginia club, which charges decent fees.

This must be a joke: $2,200 for one practice per week and one tournament per month? Jeez!

That’s really not a bad deal for northern Virginia.

I know someone on one of their new teams this year and they were pretty happy with the opportunity and it’s going really well. They didn’t want a lot of the out of town tournaments and like the practice schedule and cost.

It's actually a really bad deal for northern Virginia. It suggests that club prices need to be high because you can only get one practice per week and one tournament per month for $2,200. You do the math and conclude that two practices per week and two tournaments per month must be at least $4,400. It's ok if you are fine giving them this much money, but I am not buying the idea of the green team being "not a bad deal."

What club are you at? 2 practices a week with 2 tournaments a month for $4400 would be a good deal in northern Virginia.

See? Exactly what I said: parents in northern VA got to believe that there is no other way. Luckily I live in MD, where clubs charge more decent prices. In this area you pay ~$3,000-$3500 for 2 practices per week, 2+ tournaments per month, and position clinics. I don't buy the idea that clubs in VA charge more because their expenses are higher.

It is supply and demand. They charge more because they can. It sucks, but that’s the way it is.

But when clubs like Vienna Elite offer these lower cost options, it’s interesting that you keep needing to complain about them. They are filling a need. If they make money, great for them. But there are girls who would not be playing volleyball if they didn’t offer these options.

It's almost like you try hard to find excuses for them. I am not upset that you keep calling this "lower cost" option - feel free to call it supply and demand. I will call it ripoff because that's how I see it. Let's call this a diversity of opinions, which makes for a healthy debate.

I’m the other poster who posted this morning, not the one you are directly responding to. You didn’t respond to my post. You call it a rip off but didn’t provide any alternatives. If my daughter didn’t make a team, what do you suggest she do? Not play? To give you an idea, we are paying over 5k for a team that was a last resort and a lower level than she wanted to be on. It was her only offer. This 2k one practice a week team would have been her only option besides rec. please let us know if you hear of anything else in VA for these girls.

I do understand the frustration of not being on the club of your choice: my DD also had to settle for a club that was not her first (nor second) choice. I am also trying to put myself in the shoes of a parent whose DD didn't make a team - it must be awful. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any alternatives - I would be happy to advertise them if I become aware.

As a consumer you cannot put a lot of pressure on the prices unless you refuse to buy the product. The clubs are going to continue raising the prices as long as they find parents willing to pay. It is difficult to have a face-to-face conversation about their profit margins, so an anonymous forum like this one could be a gauge for how much they can increase the fees next year. Keep finding excuses for them (like supply and demand, lack of other options) and they will squeeze even more money out of you next year.
