Yeah Bethesda is not some magical place of unicorns and flowers but neither it is populated exclusively by rude blonds in lululemon and Excursions.

It’s an area that as walkable as anywhere in the DMV while also having SFHs and good enough public schools and a reasonable commuting distance (either by car or transit) from DC.

There aren’t a lot of areas that tick those boxes which means prices are pretty high for both residential and retail space so if you prefer a different set of priorities (closer to DC, larger lot sizes, cheaper real estate) you’ll probably pick someplace else.

But the OTT hate for Bethesda is just silly.

Let’s be real here. Even if they had the money, they wouldn’t be living in Bethesda. No, the kids with money from wealthy parents are buying places in the city like Logan Circle, Navy Yard, Shaw, Union Market.

You should see the people moving into the $3 million+ new builds. They're young families, they have the money, and they're choosing Bethesda. I wish I had that sort of money also, but I'm not going to badmouth Bethesda just because I can't afford it. I like going to the downtown area (both old and new), and I had the money, Bethesda would be my first choice in this area as to where to live.

The kids who are calling it "boring and a dump," if they actually exist and are not some figment of your trolling imagination, will one day grow up and have kids, and if they can afford it, many of them will choose Bethesda.

So many ridiculous posts on this thread.

No one is claiming Bethesda is some magical place.

Here's what it is:
-Very close to DC (on the MD side)
-Many SFH neighborhoods
-Decent public schools

So if you value a good commute downtown, want a SFM, and value public schools - Bethesda ticks all the boxes!

If you have other priorities - that's great. Good for you. No need to bash Bethesda.

You know you can still send your kids to public school even if your neighbors don't.
My kids go to Bethesda public schools and get a great education.
Ultimately, you have to be happy though.

Nothing wrong with looking around and trying to find a better fit. (But remember, you can't replicate the people here. The level of education is pretty impressive. It's hard to find people who are more progressive than Bethesda. My husband travels to a lot of lower middle-class areas in the US and there are Confederate flags, Trump signs and low tooth to mouth ratios. It's pretty darn cozy here knowing your neighbors aren't supplementing their income by turning in their landscaper to ICE for a potential $1,000 reward.)

No thanks. I like being able to be car-free all weekend -- I can walk to the farmers market, the movies, the library, the grocery store, my doctor's, the gym or go run on the CC trail.

And they cost 1.2 million bucks. Assuming a 20% down payment and with current interest rates that's a heck of a monthly payment for a house that's going to have expensive repairs popping up.

The vast majority of people living in Bethesda couldn't afford to live there if they had to buy their house today. Filled with people who bought their homes when they were a fraction of what they are now worth.
