Regardless of anyone's intelligence, the driver of that vehicle deliberately backed up, went around and past the person he hit, and drove off.

Maybe he didn’t realize he got anyone? It’s a big car. Giving benefit of doubt, innocent until guilty you know?

Man, the screw-everybody-but-cars posters are acting even more insane than usual over this.

Between this post, the one saying "anti-car people seem almost giddy" when people get hit by cars, and the posters blaming the parent for proceeding in the crosswalk, this thread may just be the high-water mark for craziness on a thread in DC Local Politics.

+1000 Are the friends and family of the criminal who ran the family over posting over and over again in this thread?

If you can't be aware of pedestrians and aren't in control of your vehicle, you should not be driving.

Honestly, I think that many of the aforementioned insane posters are, like the SUV driver who mowed over the family, negligent and reckless. They have a vested interest in obfuscating, excusing, and handwaving away the actions of other reckless drivers to ensure that they, too, do not suffer the consequences of their actions.

totally. basically every single time you cross the street on the Hill, it follows the same pattern: step into crosswalk, car rolls up to the stop line, ped checks to assess that car is actually going to yeild, ped continues to cross while car rolls through intersection. this is *every single time.* cars NEVER fullg stop or stay stopped until the pedestrians finish crossing. They ALWAYS roll through WHILE peds are crossing. The video clearly shows this common pattern, except instead of rolling slowly to yield, the driver inexplicably speeds up and hits them.

Owners of Right Proper tell WSJ theyre leaving Shaw because the crime is out of hand

Violent crimes are up 40 percent this year. Pretty astounding.

Why is this not a story on WTOP, NBC4, etc.?!

What’s the story?

Video shows a driver who proceeded through a 4-way stop and stupidly wasn’t paying attention. Video also shows pedestrians stupidly crossing the street not paying attention. A collision ensues, a child gets hurt, and the driver speeds off.

Not worth air time.

Man, you win idiot of the week hands down.

Wow. Read the story. The mother reportedly locked eyes with the driver before proceeding into the crosswalk.

I mean, I know people on this site don't care about human life, but come on....

If that’s true, then it makes her even dumber for playing a game of chicken with an SUV while her kids are in tow.

Huh? Where do you get that? She made eye contact while the SUV was stopped or slowly rolling. Then as she was walking the SUV accelerated into her.

NP. Watch the video. Forget whatever was told to a reporter. It's clear both parties weren't paying attention. The driver is certainly at fault for hitting a person in a crosswalk and then especially for fleeing the scene. But the crossing adults certainly have a responsibility for maintaining situational awareness and not putting children in harm's way.

Pretty much the stupidest thing a pedestrian can do is start walking in front of a moving vehicle with an assumption that said vehicle will stop because pedestrians have the right of way.

Yes we don’t cross streets with our kids. Plenty of places to walk without having to cross busy streets.
