We are in a very fortunate position to be able to afford both schools BUT Yale would be an additional ~35k/year. Now, my husband is in favor of Penn State purely from a financial perspective - his thinking is that, if the education is exactly the same, why pay 35k more? His thinking is that if he goes to Penn State, that 35k could be then put towards either graduate school (if DS decides to go or for a house down payment). DS loves Yale, and wants to go there.
I am in the middle, I can see the financial argument but I am concerned that my son might miss out on a unique opportunity....so we are stuck.
I am posting here because I'd very much appreciate your perspective - if the education he will receive is pretty much the same at Yale and Penn State, then what other non-academic factors should we be weighing and thinking about?

Husband is not wholeheartedly behind the decision, I think part of him still has a hard time grasping what is it exactly our son will get for 35k more a year at Yale that he can’t get at Penn State BUT he has agreed so that’s progress and good enough for now. DS is, of course, thrilled and so am I!
Thank you all for your input, much appreciated 😊
This thread happened just over a year ago, and I wondered whether there was any chance of getting an update. To be clear: the decision was ultimately made and the kid was allowed to choose Yale, though the self-made dad was a little unhappy about the price tag. Us two seeing if OP is still around somewhere and if her son enjoyed his first year of college.

All academic research clearly concludes
that where you go is not important.
The only issue is not the "ranking" which is incredibly subjective, but the peers at each school.
A school that is mentioned in the 87% percentile is more than acceptable.
Of course, save the $$. The folks on this site need to find other hobbies
