Hopefully a wake up call to DC and Md criminals- stay out of Virginia.

Fact. I am going to drop a box of donuts tomorrow for Fairfax police officers.

I missed that part. Just face it: FFX police blew this guy away in a trigger happy fit and now they're trying to weasel out of it. While the racists run their mouths and try to blame the victim. Stay classy, NOVA racists.

I'm so tired of the rich white ladies in DC and Arlington living in their million dollar houses having experienced zero to no crime in their lives telling the rest of us how we should feel sorry for criminals. When have you EVER had to experience real crime and violence? Have you been scared for your life? Probably not. You live a safe life cushioned by money so you get to be a keyboard warrior and talk about how everyone else is a racist while hoarding generational wealth for yourself. If not PP directly, I can tell you that there is a HUGE number of DC liberals that fit this bill.

Have any of you had a family member shot by a criminal? Have you sat in the hospital with your mother consoling her as she cried over your sibling who was recovering from gun shot wounds? If you have not experienced that, you can seriously back off with this poor criminal BS. You have no idea the impact crime has on the lives on victims and their families. My SIL experienced something similar when her father was shot in the stomach when his store was robbed at gun point by a criminal. He luckily survived after weeks in the hospital. Did your family live in neighborhoods with bars on the windows? I've been held up at gun point twice. It is terrifying. My DH grew up in a civil war, lost his family members, and experienced terror that you will never know. And you know what we have never done? ROBBED PEOPLE. Committed crimes. There is no excuse for it. I don't care what neighborhood or families these criminals come from. Stop excusing it. And call me a racist all you want, but I am Hispanic and grew up in a Hispanic town. Most people think the way I do.

I'm over the this crying for criminals while conveniently forgetting the trauma that they inflict on the rest of us. It's such a rich lady thing to do. But pat yourself on the back for your "tolerance".

Thank you for speaking out here.

Oh my god with the over the top reaction here. Stay in a lane, please. Your impassioned plea would make more sense if this were in carjacking thread or so ething smilar, NOT one about shoplifting at a suburban mall. Sorry...but I don't feel terrorized by shoplifters and I don't think that I should either.

This guy had a criminal history. He wasn’t just a shoplifter.

most shoplifters are criminals. the ven diagram would be almost 1 circle. so he was a shoplifter.

He has a violent criminal history. VIOLENT.

Where do you see that? And how did the officers know this as the unarmed ma ran AWAY from them? Keep carrying the water for bad cops and then act surprised when people don't trust them.

I dislike the fact that NoVa is seeing more of the same type of criminal activity so common in DC, PG, and MoCo, and I also dislike the fact that the criminals more often than not seem to be DC and MD residents looking to rob VA businesses and residents. It detracts from the quality of life and it apparently warrants stiffer sanctions that local prosecutors now seem to be seeking.

However, none of that suggests that the local police should take it upon themselves to be a vigilante or para-military force and shoot people, even those with prior criminal records, for shoplifting.

We may not know all the facts yet, but I don't like what I've read so far about this incident any more than the Park Police pulling over and murdering Bijan Ghaisar on the GW Parkway.

I think you're projecting on a lot on this case. This guy didn't shoot or threaten anyone, he didn't rob at gunpoint. he apparently did not have any weapon. So it was really very little in common with your story. You can't possibly think the police killing was justified and is the way to go for this type of crime.

People act like property crimes don’t matter. If you are running a store to support your family, people stealing from you directly affects your ability to house, feed and educate your family. Stealing someone’s car can be stealing someone’s livelihood. It matters.

It was Nordstrom. Fact.

We don't know if the victim had a weapon. You'd think FFX police would have mentioned that by now.

They announced that there was “no evidence of a weapon”

Sadly, it doesn't seem to matter if there is a weapon or not. The police just have to say they think they saw a weapon or that they somehow felt threatened. That's what I predict they will say if a weapon is not found.

Both police officers shot him. This suggests that they were simultaneously reflexively responding to some type of movement he made or action he took. This was not one random officer who lost his cool or was out to shoot someone. It was two people who felt that the situation merited the same response. I support our fairfax police and the rest of you can crawl back into your slum hole in DC.

I live in Fairfax Co. and I support the police officers too (including with my tax dollars), but I don't support escalating things to the point where someone gets shot over stealing a pair of sunglasses.

He got shot for suddenly spinning around and pointing something at the police, after leading them on a foot chase and ignoring all their commands.

He did not get shot “for shoplifting.”

But you knew that.

My guess is the chance of this turn of events as suggested above, or hearing what they thought were gunshots, is much higher than the probability the officers simply gunned him down for running with sunglasses, but will see which it was.

Nice straw man. No one said property crimes don't matter, but rather that an unarmed shoplifting at the mall doesn't merit a death sentence.
