No other VA school is quite as unpredictable as Tech. After they overenrolled in 2019, they have been trying to stabilize yield since they grossly underestimated and famously had to put freshmen in hotels. That has led to accepting lower stats kids because they felt more comfortable that they'd attend and WL high stat kids. That is just a fact, ask any college counselor familiar with the school.

I’ll be in this spot in a year.

Deferred with 4.0UW/4.5W/1570 and 13 APs or post-APs.

That is nuts. Where else did they apply?

This kid doesn’t want to go to VT . Kids / parents just want to feel proud oh my Larla got into 10/10 schools. VT has figured this out.

Precisely this. Why does no one complain when W&M does exactly the same thing? If you don't apply ED, you have a much lower chance of getting in. Why? Because they know you're not their first choice. Makes sense to me.

W&M does not do the same thing.

Of course they do. They make it very clear that ED is given a big boost. If you don’t apply ED, chances are good you won’t be accepted. Many universities do this.

DS got the "likely postcard" from W&M this month for RD. Unhooked NOVA. Formal tour two years ago was only interest shown. He was considering applying CS to Tech but saw similar stat kids getting deferred ED! Tech has some crazy calculation/objective for new admits. Whatever it is, it does NOT include admitting unhooked male CS majors from NOVA.

What is Virginia Tech's history of selecting students from the waitlist?
Last year, we were able to offer 2,458 applicants from the waitlist. In 2021, we were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist. In 2020, we were able to offer 3,961 applicants from the waitlist. In 2019, we were unable to make any offers. In 2018, we were able to offer 1,896 applicants from our waitlist. In 2017, we were unable to make any offers. As you can see, the number of students ultimately receiving offers from the waitlist is highly unpredictable and variable.

This makes it sound like most years VaTech ultimately offered admission to hundreds/thousands of students on the waitlist? That seems much higher than most schools? Below is the information from the 2020-21 Common Data Set. Combined with the information on the website above, does this establish that 3,286 of 4,924 were offered admission but only 86 accepted (presumably because by July most had made other plans)? Am I missing something?

Number of qualified applicants offered a place on the waiting list: 8,690

Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 4924

Number of wait-listed students admitted: 86

No. I read it that 8690 applicants were notified they were put on the waitlist. Of those 8000+ students, 4924 decided they wanted to go on the waitlist. The other almost 4000 applicants decided to not be put on the waitlist. Only 86 were ultimately offered a spot. How many enrolled is unknown.

We are interested in knowing these waitlist statistics since my DD was waitlisted (NoVA resident, 3.8 UW/4.2W, 33 ACT). How are others reading them? For 2021 what does "were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist" mean? It seems inconsistent with "Number of wait-listed students admitted: 86"? Is the 86 number actually "enrolled" not admitted? Reading the website waitlist FAQs and common data set together does seem to suggest that in 2021 8,690 were offered waitlist spots, 4,924 stayed on the waitlist, 3286 were offered spots off the list and 86 students enrolled off the waitlist. Otherwise, what does the 3,286 number refer to? In the alternative, if VATech only offered 86 students admission off the waitlist, I would assume that a lot of student who stayed on the waitlist will have moved on. Just like the regular admissions cycle, wouldn't VA Tech need to make a lot more offers than spots to fill the final spots? But offering admission to 3,286 of 4,924 sure doesn't sound right either.......

I know the urge to try to predict what will happen is real, but the only part to focus on is the “highly unpredictable and variable” portion. VaTech is notoriously bad at predicting yield — in both directions. They are just as likely to be way overenrolled after the first round of acceptances come in as way underenrolled.

So Tech WL the kid who could well be a NMS and 4.5 W gpa.
I think that’s nuts, whatever the major, ED or not.

Does your son have any extracurriculars that are related to engineering?
A few years ago my nephew was also accepted at UVA and rejected by Tech engineering
The only reason as to why that we could think of is that he didn’t have any engineering/stem related activities.

Do you usually respond to your own post?

There were over 300 applicants from TJ last year? Not sure how many applied this year. I knew a few kids got in.

Seems they could have tried to avoid a "damaging situation" by applying ED. Did they? No one's entitled to admission - anywhere.

Brain dead sophistry.

But what major did he apply for? Stats without this information doesn't really help provide a good picture for others given the large difference in acceptance rates between majors. And it seems the stories of very high stats kids being waitlisted usually involve engineering/computer science and the like.

If Tech is his first choice, I assume he applied ED?
