Curious... aren't these weapons already banned in DC? Hmm...

Doesn’t really matter when any f*ckwit can purchase in Virginia, or use a straw purchaser, right? Ask Kyle Rittenhouse and his mom about gun restrictions.

Guns don’t kill people. Lack of group saunas do.

And why isn’t the media calling this a school shooting?? It seems like the news reports just call it a shooting on a specific block, but the shooter was clearly targeting a school (and even updated the school wiki page before he killed himself).

I also have these same questions.

And silence from DCPS on the incident?!?

We received an email from Jackson-Reed saying, in part, this:

Around 4:00 pm, today, students and school administration were alerted of police activity in the area. During this time, we went into “alert” status meaning all doors were locked, and entry into the building was not permitted without proper identification. We also restricted all outdoor activities and kept all students and staff indoors during this time. The Metropolitan Police Department investigated and cleared us to resume normal activity around 5:00 pm

I received nothing from a school very close to Jackson-Reed. I think this is an issue where it wouldn’t hurt to over communicate and be overly cautious.

The shooter was allowed to amass an arsenal of assault weapons and ammo but it’s okay because PP lives in McLean where there haven’t been any mass casualty events for 730 days.

Imagine thinking gun policy should be set based on that!

Wow, a whole decade in a two mile radius. God bless the NRA.

We need a ban on any firearm that is not a hunting rifle (with hunting permit).

We need to enforce the ban, and aggressively collect these firearms.

Hunting rifles are actually sniper rifles - the most accurate type of gun there is. You really want nothing *but* sniper guns out there? Sounds like a terrible idea.

Lol this is why we don't let people that don't really know what they're talking about other than "guns bad" make laws

I come from a hunting family and DO know what I'm talking about. Hunters can continue to own hunting weapons with a hunting permit and thorough background check. All other weapons are banned. I promise you it WILL drastically reduce the number of deaths. Most deaths are accidental, when idiots buy handguns to "protect their family" and the very family they are trying to protect is killed while playing with it. There is a barrier to entry with hunting gear. Most people won't bother.

+ a million

Guns are for hunting, period.

I’m sorry to say that children and adults alike are being hunted in America.

The fact that he fired as many rounds as he did in the manner that he did (if you have seen the video, you know what I am talking about). His victims were almost incidental to his getting attention. And then posting the taunting messages to the police after the shooting but not turning this into a situation where more people were killed.

It looks like suicide by cop by a mentally disturbed individual.

Oh and great job by the authorities by the way. We are quick to jump on them, but they seemed to do great yesterday afternoon. And finally, great job by the EB staff and students. What an evening.

Best wishes to all of the victims for speedy recoveries and to the students for their quick mental recoveries and potential return to school.

I didn't even read his message as taunting , but I'm not sure what the acronym was. It sounded like he was saying please come get me. When we will address mental health in this country? Integrative health? Between addiction and mental illness, how many need to die?

The mental health issue is even worse than it was. Even if you have all the money in the world and agree to seek help, there just aren’t enough providers.

I know. We need a movement to address mental and integrative health in this country, like the effort and attention put towards climate change. It needs to be an all in approach, including SEL in schools, healthy lifestyle. investment in community structures like clubhouses and group activities (as people have pulled away from organized religion, what's replaced that?), access to therapy, and commitment including involuntary.

Get back in your clown car, NRA shills. These programs already exists and are huge money pits. Also, organized religion is still a dominant structure in many American's lives. We need fewer guns and better gun control, as well as licensing--much like driving a car, owning and using a gun should be a privilege, not a right.

I posted this and I agree with you on many points. I am not an NRA shill and I also think there is a case to be made for looking at the points of alienation in American society, and how that intersects with mental health in youth. Their "community" is increasingly online (I'm not saying anything new here) as opposed to communities that actually have physical gathering places IRL. Contrast to Finland where each town has a community center where people gather and vote on commun activities, or group sauna, or Italy with piazzas. It's a fact that participation in organized religion has fallen in America - what is replacing "the church" as a gathering place? This kid is from Fairfax? Where is community colocated there? Tysons? Just give it some thought - it's a conversation, not combat.

Let’s all ignoring the fact that weapons of mass destruction like those used yesterday are cheap and easy to purchase. 60+ rounds of ammo fired in seconds at teenagers a about to be dismissed from school. Apparently because he didn’t go to church enough or have a town square to hang out.
