UVA is small, but not the only good school in Virginia.
Small?
UVA has less than 4,000 seats for the first year class. It’s not huge like UCLA, Cal or Michigan. So 51,000 applications for 4,000- slots.
UCLA is in a state with 40 million people.
And also is much newer than UVA so can grow and has grown - same with Cal.
The land around UCLA is more developed and much more valuable than the area around UVA, so not sure I agree that it is in any way easier.

Highest math?
Yes. But Asian male.
I am so sorry. That should not be the case - and race should not even be a required piece of the app.
Many Asian males get in![]()
You do understand that doesn’t answer the question, right? The question is whether Asian males have to have higher qualifications to get admitted than other groups. I don’t know about UVA but that’s clearly what the Harvard data showed in the lawsuit pending before the Supreme Court.
This student has 4.4 GPA, which is the borderline cutoff for UVA. UVA doesn't care as much about SAT as it does about GPA. Many of the kids from my DC's school had an 4.0 UW/4.5+ GPA. This is definitely not the case to be claiming discrimination against Asians.
Mother of the black URM who posted above. Here is another data point. My son has a 4.4 boarder-line GPA. He was not TO and his score was in the middle 50% range. He was waitlisted and given a guaranteed Wise campus transfer option. I’m only posting to counter the false claims that URMs are stealing spots. Also, we do have a Governor’s school, IB, and math and science specialty centers in my area. Meanwhile we are celebrating that my DS unexpectedly got accepted to a top LAC tonight. Congratulations to everyone who got in UVA and other great schools tonight.
What LAC and it is diverse? Mom of black DD looking for diverse LACs (in terms of black people) and not finding many. DD is a sophomore.
The LAC is not diverse based on % of black students unfortunately.
Are you looking to stay in Virginia? Only t25 colleges or t50 national universities? I wouldn’t say many are diverse in terms of black kids within these criteria but I also care about location and I’m ok with a PWI in an economically and racially diverse (and fairly “safe”) location.
Not looking to necessarily stay in VA
Not that picky about rank. Would like T150 at least

Most selective LACs aren't very diverse outside of maybe Amherst. However, there are some very good LACs out there that have good graduation rates, want to increase diversity and can provide an excellent education.

Good news as in getting in? My DS got in from non top 3 FCPS.
Wait, FCPS ranks its high schools ?
No, of course not. They have been ranked in terms of their SAT scores. You could search for it here on DCUM. Spoiler alert: It’s pretty much the same as the average household income of the student body.

I'm surprised this isn't a straight up rejection.
That’s a rude comment made to someone willing to share. GPAs are calculated differently and aren’t everything. I’m sure the student has some great other options too! Good luck with the decision making process!

I’ve followed these college threads for several years and nothing seems quite as triggering as a rejection from UVA, especially for well-qualified students. Good luck!
If tonight is a rejection (and based on the percentage of EA deferred kids who get in, that is by far the most likely outcome at this point), I am going to be annoyed [insert stronger language here]. Kid goes to a large Arlington HS, has a 3.96 GPA/4.53 wGPA, a 35 ACT, is a full IB-diploma candidate, has taken 5 AP classes plus a Dual-Enrollment class, is an Eagle Scout, a varsity athlete, and a super strong club sport athlete as well. Other than applying ED, not sure what else he could have done. Based on the Naviance scatterplots, it should not be a close call (nothing but green below and to the left of his spot), but I suppose we'll see in a few hours.
Best of luck. All of the Eagles with high stats that I know have gotten in
