We just got our 8th grader's.
Wow.. really really bad.
94% "approaching expectations" Algebra -- 5% met; 1% exceeded
68% approaching 7th grade ELA - only 28% met ; 4% exceeded.
DC had gotten straight As during VL last year.
Totally abysmal. Who said there was little learning loss.
DC now 8th grade taking Geometry and getting straight As. But I'm really concerned that DC's Algebra knowledge (which is the foundation for upper level math) is really really weak.
What is MCPS going to do about that? I guess I'll have to put DC in summer school for Algebra.

We got ours too but they both got the top score. I guess making them attend class during the pandemic helped.
Don’t you get it? Scores were low globally. That’s bad for everyone. You want everyone in Maryland to do well, not poorly. They will now have to spend more effort on remediation, which is terrible for your kid.
This might make mcps think twice before reverting to virtual next time something happens . MCPS robbed our kids of learning and social emotional growth. I know parents here will flame me and counter with but my kidd learned and that must be poor parenting on your part etc.. but it is the truth. Our kids were robbed of 2 years of their childhood
+1 And to the smug ^^PP.. my kid attended class *everyday*, but DC gets migraines, so couldn't look at the screen a lot of days without puking up their guts and spending the entire day in bed. So F*OFF. When they went hybrid, I begged the school to let DC go FT rather than half, and they didn't even bother replying back to me.
My kids are normally straight A students.
Then, you get your kid a tutor or tutor them yourself. And, lots of new migraine medications on the market if the traditional ones don't work. Screens daily are not triggering the migraines. She has a health issue that you need to get treated. There are 6 new preventatives and three new abortive out on the market on top of the triptans and other off use medications.

Neurologist stated that those rx are pretty strong, and DC doesn't get them often enough without the screens to warrant those powerful drugs. I'm not putting DC on powerful rx just because MCPS can't figure out how to educate kids without staring at the computer for 5 hours.
And yea, since MCPS didn't teach my kid Algebra to "meet expectations" (and a lot of other kids), now we will be going over it at home this summer. Why the F* do I pay so much in taxes if I have to teach my kid myself because MCPS did a sh1tty job?
OT, but this is EXACTLY who some of us would like to see more school choice in Montgomery County.
I feel exactly the same. MCPS dropped the ball for Algebra last year and I spent hundreds of dollars on a tutor. Why isn’t MCPS being held accountable? And, if MCPS can’t teache my kid Algebra, give me a voucher to offset the cost of teaching my kid Algebra elsewhere.
You know, I was not really for school vouchers, but after the absolutely appalling test scores, I'm thinking school vouchers might be the way to go. Unfortunately, I don't think there are enough private schools to accommodate even a quarter of the 160K students in MCPS. But I am pretty pi$$ed that I pay a sh1t ton in taxes for crappy service.
Rightfully so.
If the majority of our kids can’t perform at grade level, then clearly MCPS is failing our kids. If our kids are taking Algebra, getting As, but not learning the material, then cleared MCPS is failing to provide the service that it is supposed to.
Let my kid take Algebra (or Geometry or Calculus) elsewhere and reimburse me for that cost.
I’m happy to have her take a test to prove that she understands the material.
+1. And through the Blueprint for Maryland (Kirwan Commission) the extra 4 billion is rewarding public schools for this poor education. Vouchers would be much more cost effective way to shock the bureaucracy. It’s not about private schools educating all these kids - it’s simply about taking many of them away so they actually teach again.
Do you even live in MoCo? Even if they gave out vouchers, there are only a handful of schools in the county to go to and any good school is always full.
Pay of your own math class like the rest of us do. MCPS is offering free tutoring. Use it.

The philosophy behind this is flawed. Schools are not a business they are providing a service and must teach every child enrolled. Taking away kids doesn't improve educational outcomes and given the price of most private schools vouchers would be a bonus to rich families but would make private school unaffordable to poorer families. Most private schools do not provide Esol services so that disqualifies a huge percentage of mcps students from using the voucher program
I think that's the point. They really don't care about outcomes simply to sweep the problem under the rug with vouchers that only make things worse.[/quote
FACT: vouchers help public school outcomes. I get it. You likely work for MCPS and don’t want the gravy train to end. Some of actually care about the children.

MCAP = Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program
It has a section called "How Students in Maryland Performed."
For Grade 4 level:
Math
Approached Expectations: 79%
Met Expectations: 12%
Exceeded Expectations: 9%
ELA
Approached Expectations: 77%
Met Expectations: 21%
Exceeded Expectations: 2%
Basically nearly 80% of Maryland's current 5th graders do not demonstrate grade level understanding.
That's sad but I'm happy that MCPS is doing so much better. It must be because of how well they handled DL.

The individual schools are sending them out, even though the envelope looks like it is central office.
How do you know this?
Because our school told us. That's why kids in the same grade at different schools are getting results at different times.
But they are not. All the fourth grade students got them at the same time.
Nope - people here were posting about the 4th grade results well before we got ours last week. Our school told us they put them in the mail, not central
Office.
Well my school told me categorically that they came from central office.

You really are a fool.

Is the theory here that he was supposed to take the 7th grade test?
In the right corner it gives the current grade level and in the left corner it should say which test was given.
We just got our 8th grader's.
Wow.. really really bad.
94% "approaching expectations" Algebra -- 5% met; 1% exceeded
68% approaching 7th grade ELA - only 28% met ; 4% exceeded.

That is not true. Patients who are susceptible to migraines can have them triggered by too much screen time.
Kid has reduced screen time and still getting migraines. This kid needs a headache specialists and not just a general neurologist who is giving them the blow off. Kid should also have an eye exam and mri.
Kid already saw a neurologist and pediatrician about it. Both said it was not chronic enough to warrant strong medication. But, it was worse during VL because of all the screen time. So, I had DC step away from the computer a lot during class.
And it is true. being in front of a computer for long stretches can exacerbate migraines. I have them, too. My aunt has them. My niece has them. Migraines can be genetic.
