I can't believe that if this story is true, this guy is seriously entertaining getting married to this woman, who wants him to take on significant debt to buy her a ring. If he's really going to be making that much money soon is options are going to be vastly better and she should find someone who is a more responsible partner.

I (Husband) wore a ring the first 10 years of our marriage. I then lost over 100 pounds in 16 months, and one morning my now very loose ring flew across the room as I raised my arm. The ring sits in my sock drawer. I never think about it, nor do I plan to wear another.

The fellows in my hospital all moonlight. I don’t know if residents are allowed to or if they would even have the time and energy.


Residents get paid peanuts. But with that expected income, I would not expect budget to be a factor in a ring.

OP, what it boils down to is that you two have some significant differences in perspective, which is utterly and completely normal and okay. What is not, and will doom this relationship, is your inability to communicate and compromise. This is absolutely trivial in terms of issues any relationship will go through, over time.

IMO, both of you need to step back from your relationship (and all romantic relationships), and work on yourselves before getting involved with anyone else.
