Snakes come up pretty often on Intercot and the Dis boards. Last year a kid ended up hospitalized because he was playing with a venomous snake at his Disney resort and it bit him.
Alligators don't really come up too often. There's never been an attack and Disney has been very reassuring to guests that they remove alligators when they find them.

Arguing against the placement of signs warning about gators is crazy. Period.
People are not arguing against signage, they are simply pointing out that common sense dictates you don't go in the water in Florida regardless of signage. It's a no brainer whether there is an inviting beach or lounge chairs.
Sometimes you don't need a sign to know something is dangerous or off limits. Plus - there WAS a no swimming sign...
It doesn't matter what common sense says. Disney shouldn't have assumed that all the millions of people who visit there from all over the world will have enough common sense to know not to go near the water. Disney should have assumed that there will be some people who visit there who will need to be explicitly warned about the presence of alligators in the water. Whether or not Disney anticipated that someone would ever be attacked by a gator (very rare, obviously) on their property, they DID know that alligators lived in those waters and therefore they should have had a sign notifying visitors to beware of alligators. If they had taken that very simple and no-brainer measure, it is quite likely the toddler would still be alive because his parents would have been extra careful to keep him away from the water if they had known about the presence of alligators. Doesn't matter what you or I or anyone thinks the parents should have known; it matters that they didn't know and that Disney should have told them.

Is it that I'm ignorant or not a helicopter parent? You have got to be kidding me that every Floridian or educated human would NEVER fathom dipping a toe in the water at dusk during a beach gathering. I refuse to govern my life and my children's lives by trying to prevent freak accidents.

Disney should have had more detailed signs-I do agree with that!
The toddler should not have been allowed to even wade in murky, open waters in the dark-especially with a no swimming sign and the fact that there is a steep drop off, also indicated by the sign. The parents were nearby, but not holding his hand.
God should not have made alligators so predatory, too many people are killed or injured by them.
That should cover who is to "blame" in this tragic incident.
It is sad, and awful for anyone to lose their child. The manner in which this child was lost if horrific. My heart goes out to the family.
