Looking at the schedule for a local GA team and it looks like they are traveling all the way to Alabama for a regular league game.
The conferences are going to re-align, and the NC teams will not go to Alabama anymore.
Who will be in the new ga conference alignment?
Most likely
WAKE FC
South Carolina Surf
Charlotte Development Academy
One Knoxville
Triangle United
Nashville United

You might want to check your assumptions. GA will have more teams in the DC DMV area than ECNL, resulting in less travel. As for quality, I'd reserve judgement on that as well until we see how rosters shake out over the spring and summer. Several strong GA teams in the area are forming and my observations after witnessing several ID sessions of ECNL and GA is that the good GA teams will be on-level and in some cases better than their local ECNL counterparts.
