That is NO excuse. After the Natalie Holloway situation, all girls know to NEVER leave their friend alone with a stranger. They should have stayed there with her.
Natalee Holloway disappeared before/around when these women were born. I highly doubt that situation influences college-aged kids nowadays in any way.

They were all drunk and adults responsible for their own choices. She is to blame for getting drunk and swimming. Drunk people have terrible judgment. The boy isn't to blame for her drowning and neither are her friends.

Those girls were the rats that abandoned the sinking ship. They got themselves and their disappeared friend into one hell of a mess. They left a random boy who made their acquaintance a few hours prior to face the music for their mistakes.
I'm going to repeat that for the idiots in the room: This is a random boy who had just met them a few hours before. Now he is getting raked over the coals for a situation these future physicians created for themselves. The fact they're okay with this boy taking the fall for their mistakes speaks volumes about their character, their ethics, their essential cowardice, and their lack of basic decency.
Someone on this thread is trying very hard to keep the negative spotlight on him, while keeping the girls out of the picture. The disappeared girl and her lifelong friend were both local to the area. Someone on this thread doesn't want "their good names smeared." They're okay this random nice Midwestern boy is taking the fall in their place. Do you all get that? This is very ugly behavior.
The boy did the honorable thing by not leaving the scene immediately, and now has been dragged through the mud. We aren't even sure - nor is he - if he was in fact the last person to see her alive. He was too drunk to be in a position to state that affirmatively.
These girls need to be named out loud. Their behavior is abhorrent.

The story leaves out who the other person was that she went into the water with and whether they also drowned.
Was it one of her friends? Another guest at the hotel? A local?
If you read the article, the other person is a man whom her friends left her with on the beach at 5:55am. He was seen heading back to his room at 8:55am. He is the one who provided the swimming narrative. Seems rather sus to me.
