He is a green card holder. He is not a citizen. My understanding is that if he’s pleads guilty to a felony, he will be deported after he serves his time.

No. Some crimes are more waivable than others in immigration court and pleading guilty to one of those crimes or not could be part of plea negotiations. After he serves whatever sentence, he can be turned over to ICE.
