For the third time, it's an internal committee consisting of administrators. there is no medical school at ND. None of the committees have outsiders on them. They have used consultants who ARE medical experts to form the plan. which clearly didn't work, but they certainly had a plan formed with the advice of medical experts.

You seem to not have much experience working with committees. That makes you 1. very lucky, but 2. unused to how they operate. I have spearheaded a number of committees, too many committees, and they are rarely filled with experts. You hire the experts, you don't put them on the committee.

Exactly. ND has been working with the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins to devise the plans. That said, it is has not gone well. I am VERY worried about my son who is there right now and currently healthy. I do not want him to end up in one of the isolation units as they are not well staffed for the influx of cases. My prediction is he will be on a plane home by next week.

Just because they worked with Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic doesn't mean ND took all of their advice. JHU is not doing anything onlien this fall and told its students not to come to Baltimore.

No regular weekly or biweekly asymptomatic testing and full isolation / quarantine = outbreaks. It is true that outbreaks puts faculty and staff at far greater risk of illness than students but as an employer they cannot take that risk. They also should monitor whether they will be overburdening local hospital capacity.

These universities do not operate in a vacuum, expecting any community to fully comply with social distancing is foolish (look at nearly ever communty around the country). People who thought this fall would not be a grim experience for students is insane.

This was the year to take a gap year, especially if you are first year student.

There's a reason why Cleveland Clinic and Hopkins are not listed on these websites. It's because no reputable epidemiologist or infectious disease specialist would put associate their name and sully their reputation by associating publicly with a college that planed to open fully during the height of a national pandemic.

How can they call it the Medical/Health SubCommittee and have not a single person on it from the medical field?

They worked extensively with infectious disease specialists from the Cleveland Clinic.

My DD is a freshman at ND and is miserable. The restrictions that they've had in place have not made it a anything remotely close to a college-like experience. Grab-n-go food is terrible, no sports, no clubs, difficult to connect with masks, etc. She was ready to come home before yesterday's announcement. Now with the new restrictions, it'll be even worse.

Are you for real? How was this a surprise to you? ND made it clear that school would be different and you ignored it. Go cry somewhere else. You and your kid had ample opportunity to be aware. Go ahead and convince your kid that she'll be damaged forever by this. Don't even mention the pandemic and that some kids have lost their parents or other family members. Poor baby. Her freshman year experience isn't what she expected.

I'm sorry. I know that ND is not a school where many students from the same class from high school would attend, because it is so hard to get in. State university students usually benefit from going in knowing someone. ND has a very robust dorm system, though. Has the dorm planned appropriate social activities? My DD's living-learning community has already planned a Zoom platonic "speed dating" activity, for instance. Maybe it should be renamed "Speed Friendship" or "Speed Networking" or something. Next week is a Zoom Escape Room. All of this is before the kids even move in. The dorm staff at ND has many adults who should be helping to form community. Don't be afraid to reach out if your daughter is that miserable. ND is one of the last colleges left that takes "in loco parentis" seriously.

DP. I’m pretty sure every hall staff members is trying to take care of students who are sick, in worse shape than your daughter, or — more likely — responding to dozens of calls and emails from parents (not to mention multiple calls, texts and emails from same parents) who are freaking out even though there child has not been a close contact of a positive case, and is exhibiting zero symptoms. So give those RAs and rectors a pass the next few weeks, tell the kids to get ahead in their classes, grab another freshman and ask them to go walk around the lake, read a book, study on the quad, or whatever. Patience, flexibility and kiNDness.
