Thanks for your perspective PP. Are you opposed to the overall DEI effort by SR, or just the particular Multicultural Festival breakout groups that have caused concern among some families?

This sounds like a PR person.

I wrote the post and I am absolutely not a PR person.

If you don't see that it is reactionary and absurd then there is just no use discussing it. It was neither age appropriate, nor studied prior to implementation. It surfaced from a place of guilt, not education, and therefore beyond what I am paying them to do.

Then what are your thoughts on the issues you presented?

I think the DEI effort that SR has undertaken is important, especially in light of the feedback they received from their students and alumni of color last summer. I think the Better Together discussions among parents they have conducted have been good, but there hasn't been one for awhile and i wish more parents participated. My DD is a 9th grader and participated in the Multicultural Festival and thought it was good. She was in a White Accountability group and did not feel threatened - she said she learned a lot and it helped her appreciate the history of white privilege in our country. The students themselves help lead the DEI efforts in the Upper School too, so they have a voice in the process.

Like anything else, there is always room for improvement, and not everyone is going to like it. But I think they have made a good faith effort to do better than they have in the past and work to make the school more cognizant of the need to be more inclusive.

Wow. Accountability groups for children. They have totally jumped the shark. I am jaw dropping shocked that there has not been press on this.

You have no idea what the sessions were like - you just focus on the title of the group. And these are high schoolers, not young children.

+1 to this.
Wrong 14 is a child. This is beyond inappropriate and not within the scope of any school. These are household discussions. The school overstepped and the HOS should step up, apologize, and step down.

Do you have a daughter there? Do you even know what the program covered? Can you tell us what they covered in the breakout sessions? And are you trying to say that schools should not be involved in teaching their students anything about our nation's history with systemic racism? That this is only appropriate to talk about at home?

History yes. This approach, absolutely not.

What is specifically is wrong with this approach?

Not sure what ADW stands for, but you might want to check out SR's DEI webpage to get a better understanding of what the school is trying to do. Many area schools are incorporating DEI initiatives into their curriculum and/or school focus. It's not just SR.

Which schools don't? They should lead with that in their marketing. If my child was subjected to this I would have a suit filed by COB.

I'm not even sure what this is supposed to mean. And you'd likely lose your lawsuit.
