WTH is "booing" -- just had a baby and on maternity leave and not sure what all this stuff means

For years we thought we got lucky since our neighborhood does no such silly thing as booing. Then last year we got booed. I had to scramble to put together a basket for another neighbor--the guilt was strong. I decided to boo a child-free neighbor b/c lord knows that last thing a parent needs is another chore.

Yeah, I have to agree. OP, I’m sure you are a nice person, but your neighbor wanted a non confrontational way to get out of the “Boo’ing”. A sign saying “Please don’t Boo us” would just be a weird thing to put up. Maybe her kids have allergies and the candy is a pain. Maybe one of them is diabetic. Maybe they don’t celebrate Halloween. Maybe someone did boo them from a DIFFERENT street or neighborhood and your eagle eyes missed it. Maybe she thinks “Boo’ing” is stupid.

I’ll give you some advice, if you don’t mind. When you have neighbors that are “nice but a little standoffish”, take the hint gracefully. You have permission as a neighbor to open the door for a closer relationship in the first few interactions, but after a few aloof exchanges, give them their space.

It sounds like she doesn’t want to participate AT ALL this year, even after she’s back, and I think this sign is her attempt to be tactful and non-confrontational about opting out. I’ve never heard of this but if someone “boo-ed” our house I’d probably thank the neighbor for the candy, eat it, and it would end there. The present is cute and appreciated but that doesn’t mean some neighbor has any day over how I subsequently spend my time and energy.
