UN has 1 peacekeeping operation in this hemisphere-Haiti. It's on an island shared with the Dominican Republic. USA is the largest contributor to the UN overall. No UN presence in Central America to deal with the issues. USA-funds the UN and multilaterals. Global Compact on Migration-different info on census such as citizenship. US politicians object.

https://peacekeeping.un.org/en/mission/onuca NA currently

US intervention for safety and security? Non-security issues impacting migration? Ideally US funds to the UN should be used. Pay the UN and multilaterals plus pay to deal with anything for this hemisphere?

Why doesnt the UN send help? Or why dont we just close the border until we can sort out (meaning our politicians can sort out) how to humanely deal with a massive unprecedented influx. Havent they said they do not have the money to keep up?

https://www.courthousenews.com/feds-tell-9th-circuit-detained-kids-safe-and-sanitary-without-soap/

The Trump administration argued in front of a Ninth Circuit panel Tuesday that the government is not required to give soap or toothbrushes to children apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border and can have them sleep on concrete floors in frigid, overcrowded cells, despite a settlement agreement that requires detainees be kept in “safe and sanitary” facilities.

All three judges appeared incredulous during the hearing in San Francisco, in which the Trump administration challenged previous legal findings that it is violating a landmark class action settlement by mistreating undocumented immigrant children at U.S. detention facilities.

“You’re really going to stand up and tell us that being able to sleep isn’t a question of safe and sanitary conditions?'” U.S. Circuit Judge Marsha Berzon asked the Justice Department’s Sarah Fabian Tuesday.

U.S. Circuit Judge William Fletcher also questioned the government’s interpretation of the settlement agreement.

“Are you arguing seriously that you do not read the agreement as requiring you to do anything other than what I just described: cold all night long, lights on all night long, sleeping on concrete and you’ve got an aluminum foil blanket?” Fletcher asked Fabian. “I find that inconceivable that the government would say that that is safe and sanitary.”

This is torture and the UN should sanction the US now for human rights violations.

Kind of a bonehead move to come over in the first place.

So she had her anchor baby early via emergency c section while committing a crime?
They’re really not sending their best.

It would be more convenient for Border Patrol if the baby died. Mom too.

Her husband should have demanded help fir his wife and baby.

GOP held the purse strings for 2 years. If they cared so much they should have done something.

Why complain about Ds when your own party DGAF?

The crisis wasn't 2 years ago. It's now after building for months and officials warning congress this would happen

It was a “crisis” a year ago when the GOP still had the house and the senate.

WHAT WAS SAID
What the president reiterated again yesterday, and he has said every day from when he sought this office, is we have a crisis of illegal immigration.
— Vice President Mike Pence, meeting with members of Congress on Wednesday.

“These smugglers know these rules and regulations better than the people that drew them. As a result, there’s been a 325 percent increase in minors, and a 435 percent increase in the smuggling or attempted smuggling of families and minors into our country.”
— President Trump, speaking to the National Federation of Independent Businesses on Tuesday.

“In the last three months we've seen illegal immigration on our southern border exceed 50,000 people each month. Multiples over each month last year.”
— Kirstjen Nielsen, the homeland security secretary, at a news conference on Monday.

Wrong. Orderly repatriation to their home country is all that is necessary. You are ridiculous

This is not either or. Even if what you want is orderly repatriation - from the moment you collect the children and hold them in detention centers while you await the orderly repatriation, you have to feed them, clothe them, keep them safe. The government is failing at this most basic, most important duty. The serious maltreatment of these children is either intentional or negligent, and either way it is immoral.

Well the ideal is a physicall barrier fro entry in the first place, but I was referring to what to do with the ones already here.

This is clogging up the system from people who actually need asylum.

There is no wall. That is not how this gets fixed. You want to talk about walls - and refuse to talk about anything else. And meanwhile, LOOK WHAT IS HAPPENING. This is happening in our country, on our watch, and you f*cking morons will only bark on about walls.

JFC you are like a dog with a bone but at least dogs are charming and cute.

Are you saying no compromise is possible? That Congress cant addres this by allocating more money for toothbrushes (and as we all know that the tip of the iceberg on money needed for these children) and more or a border barrier? Why one or the other? I'm curious.

Democrats offered money for the wall. Trump turned it down.

So let's just abuse children now. Richest country in the world. American exceptionalism. We set the standard for how things ought to be. Let's abuse children in jail because we can't find the money to pay for toothbrushes. Need to spend all that cash on Trump going golfing

More than $100 million of taxpayer dollars spent for Trump to go golfing. I think we can come up with some toothbrushes

https://www.newsweek.com/trump-golf-102-million-report-1432550

Actually we can’t. Trumps president. These kids are illegals, so...

And lord knows we can’t interrupt Dear Leader’s golf game to prevent children’s deaths.

of course not. he's too busy tweeting to think about getting humanitarian supplies to the children's prisons.

maybe he'll toss the babies a roll of paper towels at some point.

it's funny - i seem to remember there being funds available for emergencies at one point. didn't we have some emergencies? wouldn't jailed babies not having toothbrushes qualify as an emergency? or are those funds just for walls.

Only if the US government let’s them in to do it. The feds won’t do that, though, because they’re trying to keep people away from these facilities they can’t report just how bad they are.
