How do you get your child placed in just the AAP math class??

It’s school dependent. At my base school, the PP’s kid would automatically be placed in advanced math for 3rd. At my center, there are no opportunities for gen ed kids to take advanced math until 5th grade no matter how advanced they are in math.

exactly. That is why there is such a push to get kids into Level 4 -- b/c there is a cliff b/t level 3 and level 4. It's an "all" or "almost-nothing" situation.

If they are in level 3 plus highest math and highest reading group it shouldn’t be a huge difference.

are you not getting it? Level 3 = 45 min. in ONE subject each quarter for 45 min per week. So, if you are in "Level 3" at my kids' elem. school, and if you are lucky enough to get the pull outs each quarter (that is not guaranteed even if your CogAT is 130), then the most you can get is 45 min (TOTAL) per week for about 6 weeks out of each quarter. I think that IS a "huge difference" compared to fulltime AAP at a center.

I suppose schools could do things differently but at our school level III is totally separate weekly pullout in addition to a kid theoretically being in the highest math and highest reading group on a daily basis in the regular class.

My daughter is in the advanced math group (which means by default the same kids are in her language arts group) but did not get in Level III AAP. Most of her friends are in Level III with a 45 min pullout once a week at most. The majority of her friends in Level III are NOT in the advanced math group. Makes no sense to me.

Should I appeal? DS is 99 percentile for luck and grade in Cogat.

I'm starting to get the sense from this example and a few others that higher consideration was given to children whose parent submitted extra samples and paperwork, regardless of whether or not they were in the pool. Our AART teacher told us that technically we didn't have to submit anything extra if we were in the pool, but highly encouraged it. I'm glad he did.

Agree and ironically, it is the people with very carefully curated packages of info that are most likely to have prepped on the test. The more clueless/laissez faire parents who didn't submit anything but expected the school to go by their kids non-prepped test scores or the teacher rec are disadvantaged by this.

Dp here with rejected kid with similar scores.

When my child went from preschool to public elementary, his art work seemed to be worse. His work has no lipstick. My 7yo’s spelling is atrocious. He writes simple sentences. He draws stick figures.

I do plan to appeal and we will be working on work samples to submit. I will help add some lipstick to his work because my kid is not writing creative essays and answering logic problems on his own for fun.

It seems like your child might be stronger in quantitative than verbal. You might speak with your school's AART about placing your child in the AAP math class. Some schools will do this if a child shows strength in a specific area.

Neither. I’ve heard that 50% of Appeals get in. That’s still just a few kids per AAP class. Most people either don’t appeal or get a WISC and then decide that it isn’t high enough to appeal.

It is 1/4th who appeal get accepted.

25% of people who appeal get accepted or 25% of aap are students who appealed?

Any suggestion on what to do with our situation? DS already scored 98 & 99 percentile on cogat and nnat.

How did you NOT get in the pool with those COGAT scores? I thought at a minimum if one of the sub-components was 132 or above you were automatically in the pool. I would check your child's packet and maybe schedule a meeting with the AART teacher.

Could be possible if the scores are from private schools. I wish the template had also asked about FCPS vs Private.

Is there a trend that the 'Not In' with high scores are non-FCPS scores?

There are statistically very, very few kids applying from private schools.
